Ryan waited at the infirmary for Gloria.
She had said she was going to accompany him to his treatment.
Instead, the door opened up and he saw Miguel Alvarez bringing a wheelchair over to him.
“What the fuck, Alvarez? Where’s Gloria?”
“She couldn’t make it. She had a meeting with that pharmaceutical company.”
“So she sent you instead?”
“Hey, fuck you O’Reily.There are a lot of other things I could be doing.”
“Yeah, like cleaning bedpans.”
“You want to get in the fuckin’ chair and shut the fuck up, please?”
Ryan grumbled but got into the chair.
They sat in the waiting room and Ryan felt like crying.
He couldn’t do it with Miguel sitting there.
“Hey,” Miguel said, softly, “you don’t gotta pretend with me. I know this shit is scary. But, just think-you’re not alone.”
“How am I not alone?”
“Well, fuck you very much,” Miguel said, but he was smiling.
“Sorry-it’s just Gloria is a doctor, and she -“
“Has pretty brown eyes and a sweet smile.”
“Yeah,” Ryan looked at Miguel. “But so do you,” he added and grinned.
“I know that, baby. I was always the best looking guy around.”
Ryan groaned. “And modest, too.”
Just then one of the patients came out, looking grim and gaunt.
Ryan flinched.
On instinct he grabbed for Miguel’s hand, and Miguel just let him.
“Oh, sorry,” he said when he noticed what he’d done.
“It’s ok, baby.” Miguel reassured him.
“Do you call everybody baby?” Ryan wondered.
“Only if they’re cute,” Miguel smirked when Ryan gave him the finger.

After that day Miguel attended every session Ryan had, joking and teasing Ryan until he was distracted enough to face the treatment.
Ryan always asked if Gloria was going to be accompanying them, but after a while he didn’t care.

Miguel was the first person to see Ryan when he came back into Oz. “Hey, O’Reily is back! Oz wouldn’t be Oz without you,” he said with a smile.
Ryan wanted to grab him but settled for a smile. “Come up to my pod. I have an ask for you.”
Miguel looked intrigued and came up a few minutes later. “What do you need, baby? A photo of Dr. Nathan? A lock of her hair?”
“No, just this,” he pulled Miguel close and kissed him.
“What the fuck, Ryan? “ Miguel asked, even as he was moving closer so Ryan could kiss him again.
“How-“Miguel asked breathlessly, “is this an ask?”
“I’m asking you if you want me.”
“What about Gloria and her brown eyes?”
“You have brown eyes, too. And a sexy mouth,” Ryan said as he kissed it once again, “and you don’t know the things you do to me when you touch me.”
“I-I’ve never touched you!”
“Not sexually, Just- the way you touch me. Your hands on me, fuck, do I have to explain everything?”
Miguel smiled. “ Don’t say another word,” he said, and after another kiss added, “Please. Not another word.”
