Tonight were roller derby tryouts. I felt pretty confident after the 'last chance' skating practices we had Monday and Tuesday nights. Well, not truly confident, but at least I wasn't scared to death/nervous/stressed like I was last week.
Luckily, theyre not picking a certain number of people. Theyre basing it on whether you can do the skills we've practiced for 2 months and your determination/commitment to learn and get better. Whew, that's good because I know I'm not too spiffy on some of the skills.
Stupid me overslept this evening before the tryout time. I always try to take a nap in the afternoon after work before I go do any kinda exercise. So I get to the rink only about 10min late, so I didnt miss much, just warm-up stretching. The girls were split into 3 groups for the tryouts. One group on the track showing off skills, one group going through interviews and the other group just waited around till we rotated. Oh, and we had to take a written quiz too, on the official derby rules. That was easy, it was multiple choice. I think I did ok on the skills part. I couldve done my jumps better, but I was nervous that if I jumped too high, I wouldn't land right on my wheels and I'd go down like a sack of potatoes. So, I kinda half-assed the jump. blah. I hope that doesnt count too much against me. Everyone said I did good with the jammer drill, though. I had to be the 'jammer' and go against a pack of veteran skaters on the team already with them full force hitting/blocking me, preventing me from getting through. I fell a few times though(wah), but I got up as fast as I could and got back into the fray. I even got a few good elbow blocks in there too.
The interview part was just a few general questions about conflict/resolution. Like, "how do you handle conflict in your daily life?" I guess they really didnt wanna hear stuff like, "I just kick bitches in the jaw", but that'd be fun though. That part went ok too, I guess. I didnt get any weird looks from the veterans. :P
I also got interviewed by a local newspaper reporter who was there writing a story about the team/freshmeat(newbie girls) and tryouts. The reporter said the story wont run any time soon, though. blah. I wanna know if I get quoted in the article. :P
So all in all, it went ok and I have a pretty good chance of making the league. Most likely on the JV team though, not the uber-experienced varsity team. We'll see. I dunno when they'll post who made it. I think they'll inform us in email. I hope it's soon.
Oh yeah, Jason's moving here next Saturday!! eep! (sorry, jason. i couldnt help that eep. it's a reflex response)
