Karma

walking to the store, my friend and i were approached by a woman holding a card. on the card, written in what looks like a child's handwriting, "i do not have much money, please help by sparing a few dollars," and so on. neither of us had cash on us, we told her. she then asked if we could purchase something for her at the dollar store. i said ok. as we went into the store, she started grabbing items and asking me, "could i get this one other thing?" anyways, it ended up being three things, paper towels, toilet paper and shampoo. at least they were basic necessity items that i was glad to help out with. i paid and then we left the store.

"there. that should be some good karma for you," my friend told me afterward. that kinda bothered me. see, i don't believe in karma. it's a nice idea and all, but it encourages people to expect things in return from their actions. but i believe that one shouldn't perform a good deed to expect one in return. if something good does happen to happen in return, it would only be coincidence. that's all. not some mythical or magical force that makes these deeds come back, it's just coincidence, and nothing more. one should do good things just for the sake of doing good things.
