I'm sitting in Clinical Exam lecture in which we are going over GU/Rectal. It is a glorious time and always grand. We don't have lab today, so that makes me happy. I am so behind with school work. I have a public health exam next week. We have a bunch of distance education lectures that I need to go over. Also, next Thursday I have an OMM exam. The ( Read more... )

I don't know as much about MD med scholars program. My old suitemate at MSU was a DO med scholar. I think as far as competitive goes it depends on your etc. I was in Lyman Briggs, which is a small school within MSU. It is for science majors. They only accept 500 people a year although they were talking of expanding when I graduated, so they might have. For dorms you would live in Holmes Hall which is on the East end of campus. A majority of your classes the 1st 2 years are in the classrooms of that dorm, which is nice and the class sizes are a lot smaller. I'm a huge science dork I'll admit, so I liked that environment a lot. You will eventually have to take the large Organic Chem class that is in the Chem building and about 600 people. I recommend taking the 300 level chem vs. the the 200 level I know it would be harder, but the instructor for that course is better. If you want the party environment you can still get it. It's kinda one of those things that with being in Briggs you can be as involved or removed from the party scene as you want to be. All of the people you will be living with for the most part are in Lyman Briggs, so you'll be around all of the people in your classes, which makes things nice for group projects, studying, etc.

Obviously U of M has a very well known medical school, but I also have been told by many that it's harder to get into their med school if you went there for undergrad. I know a couple of people who have done it, so it kinda depends on the kind of student you are. If you were to take the MSU MD med scholar program I still recommend taking the MCAT. I know the test sucks, but I think that it is something that everyone should take just to experience it. I know when my friend was a DO scholar she just had to graduate with a certain gpa and she would get in. I don't think they required a MCAT score. I don't know if the MD med scholar is the same or not.

I have to go study for an exam tomorrow. I hope that this helps you. If you have any other questions let me know. If I think of anything else I'll tell you.

At this point I'm not looking to get into UM med school but just any med school. The DO scholars program is similar to the med scholars program. med scholars are also not required to take the MCAT.

I've signed up for Lyman Briggs so that is where I'll go if I go. I want to make sure that the people at Briggs are also striving to go to med/dent/do, etc school because I sill want to be among motivated students. Do you find that this is the case?

One of draws of the med scholars program is that I want to study abroad for a semester or year and it doesn't seem like I'll be able to do that at UM as much because of studying for MCATs and the application process. How have premeds arranged study abroads during the academic year, or are there many that study abroad at all?
