I'm sitting in Clinical Exam lecture in which we are going over GU/Rectal. It is a glorious time and always grand. We don't have lab today, so that makes me happy. I am so behind with school work. I have a public health exam next week. We have a bunch of distance education lectures that I need to go over. Also, next Thursday I have an OMM exam. The ( Read more... )

I found your comment on do_med community in which you mentioned that you went to MSU for undergrad. I'll just assume that it's Michigan State U, and not some other state that starts with M...

I considering either accepting a place in the MD medical scholars program at MSU or going to U of Mich. If you could share some of your thoughts about the strength of the academic program at MSU, especially premed I would really appreciate it.

How competitve are premed students there? I still want to be with people who are intelligent and motivated to get into med/do school. Are those people relatively easy to find? I don't want to be with partyers, as is the perception of MSU.

I just wrote an epic tonight. Thanks!

I don't know as much about MD med scholars program. My old suitemate at MSU was a DO med scholar. I think as far as competitive goes it depends on your etc. I was in Lyman Briggs, which is a small school within MSU. It is for science majors. They only accept 500 people a year although they were talking of expanding when I graduated, so they might have. For dorms you would live in Holmes Hall which is on the East end of campus. A majority of your classes the 1st 2 years are in the classrooms of that dorm, which is nice and the class sizes are a lot smaller. I'm a huge science dork I'll admit, so I liked that environment a lot. You will eventually have to take the large Organic Chem class that is in the Chem building and about 600 people. I recommend taking the 300 level chem vs. the the 200 level I know it would be harder, but the instructor for that course is better. If you want the party environment you can still get it. It's kinda one of those things that with being in Briggs you can be as involved or removed from the party scene as ( ... )

At this point I'm not looking to get into UM med school but just any med school. The DO scholars program is similar to the med scholars program. med scholars are also not required to take the MCAT.

I've signed up for Lyman Briggs so that is where I'll go if I go. I want to make sure that the people at Briggs are also striving to go to med/dent/do, etc school because I sill want to be among motivated students. Do you find that this is the case?

One of draws of the med scholars program is that I want to study abroad for a semester or year and it doesn't seem like I'll be able to do that at UM as much because of studying for MCATs and the application process. How have premeds arranged study abroads during the academic year, or are there many that study abroad at all?

Briggs kids are definitely all striving to go into science. Many are future med/dent/vet med, but there are also those that are just heavy into science that want to do medical research and teach. Many people also did study abroad. I know that more of the people that I know that went on study abroad went during the summer. I'm sure if you look into it though you could go at another time in the year. I know for the summer there are 2 medical type programs offered - 1 in London and 1 in Costa Rica. You might want to look into those. I don't know if they are specific to summer or if they are offered throughout the year ( ... )
