Happy's Rec List - The First Edition

Jul 09, 2012 23:48

I've been reading the AvengerKink for a while now, and I've been told I should start writing a Rec List. So here's the first. I have a few fics (fixes?) in mind for review, and I'll work my way through them, making  a few per post. And unashamedly, I am going to start with the fills  for my own prompts.

The First Prompt in question can be read in its entirety here: The Prompt, But the summary is this: The Trials and Tribulations of the Avengers Nanny.

First review is for Some Things Nannies Can't Do by ncc1701a

Some Things Nannies Can't Do is split up into various shorts, each focused around a subset of the children. As Ncc1701a has acknowledged, it's not quite what I had asked for in the prompt, but it is still very good. The entire fic is written sort of Memoirs/Diary style, first person, as if the Nanny is monologuing  to the reader.

Overall, the fic is definitely an entertaining read. In particular, my favourite lines include "Jörd turned the cat green on purpose" as echoed by Captain America's Son, James, and "Philip smirked his mother’s smirk, the one that makes mafia crime bosses rethink their options."

Ncc1701a does say that Clint is the scary one in the Natasha-Clint relationship, which I personally disagree with, but it's still very good. I would like to know more about Jörd's adventure to the docksides, and heartily encourage at least a mini-fic covering the events, and I love the scene at the end with Banner's adopted daughter.

Overall, a very good fic. Should be read.

Next up is Nanny Needed by knittyknicker
Now, Nanny needed is technically a Glee/Avengers crossover, which I admit to being very skeptical about in the beginning, however, I prompted, so I read. The main character in this fic, the Nanny in question, is apparently from Glee, but the author does not make a big deal of it. A few mentions of the character's history, and a few other characters are name-checked once or twice is the entire involvement of Glee in this fic.

This fic is written in a To-Do list style, interspersed with the events causing that entry on the list. The fic starts with the initial interview, and follows through what I assume is at least the first few months to a year of various events, the timescale on this fic is kind of vague, but not necessary really.

Sometimes in this fic it was a little confusing keeping track of who was who's child, but it was still very good. It tagged all the points I asked for and more, and overall, was a very good read. To-do number 48 was good, illustrating just how inured Kurt (the nanny) had become to the various atrocities super-powered kids were inflicting on him regularly. I also loved Astrid's Quiet room and the line "And you know the rule. Timeout until I finish the forms."

This wasn't quite what I expected, but it was exactly what I wanted, and it should be read.

My final Review for this edition of Happy's Rec List, is of my first prompt. The full thing can be found, under the title of " The Avengers take turns telling bedtime stories to the ever growing posse of Avengers children", with the fill just under that. This one, I would like to give credit to the Author, but it's written under Anonymous. Oh well.

Now, I would rate the two above fills, as about equal. But this one, I just don't like quite as much. Sure there are good parts, and yes, it fills the prompt. It just doesn't quite press all the buttons.

But still, it is an enjoyable read, and has some good moments, such as the deflating of Tony's ego when his child informs him that Jarvis tells better stories than he does.

It is certainly worth the read, but I wouldn't bookmark it.

Now, I'll start working my way through the Completed Fills list on the Kinkmeme, and review a few more for next time.
