The Tale of the Locked Room

My daughter Lauren has started a new fun hobby this week--locking doors. And she's not locking doors of rooms that she's in. She's locking doors of rooms she's not in. On one day this week, she locked 2 out of 3 bathroom. I couldn't find one of those little stick keys that are normally kept above doors, and since I'm a terrible lock picker, I couldn't get them open. Luckily, my husband was able to get them open, but until he got home, we had to go upstairs any time we needed to potty.

So Tuesday, Valentine's Day, the day we were going to the library, I went upstairs to get something for Lauren out of her bedroom, and guess what... she had locked their bedroom door. Now, for some reason unbeknownst to me, the previous owners felt it necessary to put a REAL lock on that door. Like, the kind you put on doors that go outside. I have no idea why. Also, we did not receive a key to that door. I had never really thought of it as a problem before because usually, the kids are inside the room when they lock the door, and I just yell at them from outside until they unlock it.

I was not happy with Miss Lauren. Our library books were in that room. They were already late. Blah.

So when Andrew got home that night, he tried to open it with a credit card. The door was too tight. Then, we looked up videos on how to pick a lock. We're not very good lock pickers. I like to think it's because we're just too darn honest to break into a locked door. :)

We talked about it, and I thought I remembered the window being unlocked from when we'd opened the windows before... except that it was on the 2nd floor. I borrowed a ladder from my sister-in-law, but it wasn't tall enough. When Andrew got home, I showed him our predicament, and Andrew devised a solution.

Doesn't that look SO safe?

Let's take a closer look...

Despite my protests that this was not at ALL safe, and he was going to break his neck, I held the ladder while he climbed up and actually got the window open and crawled through. I was impressed.

So now we can get into the room again. Yay! Now... I'm going to go buy a different door knob... pronto!

Oh, also, the window's locked now, thieves, so don't get any ideas.... :)
