I was looking for a book to read from the boxes in our garage (grossest place EVER!) and came across my old letter box. It was just an old shoebox that I happened to stick every letter I've ever gotten from anybody. Unfortunately, mice had gotten to it b/c silly me put a letter in there that my nephew Noah had sent me that had a little debbie cookie in it. Hmph... didn't think that one through... they also chewed on some other letters and pooped on a lot of things. the paper also smells weird b/c our garage stinks. the previous owner of this house worked on cars in it, so it stinks really bad.
I took all of them out and glanced at them quickly.. read a few. There are letters from all of my siblings. My Dad and Cheryl. Birthday cards my Mom signed from when I was a kid. Letters from my friends that went on missions. Birthday cards and letters from friends. Postcards. Letters from old boyfriends. And most importantly, lots of letters from the love of my life--Andrew. It was fun to go through. I admit that I teared up a bit when I started reading letters from my family, though. In fact, the letter my sister Amy wrote me on my 16th birthday brought tears to my eyes.
Why don't we write letters anymore? I cherish those so much. Stupid digital age... with all its wonder it's eliminated some of the special parts of life. What's better than getting a handwritten letter in the mail from a loved one? It makes me so happy. Heck, I get excited when I get a real e-mail and not something from Facebook.
One of the reasons I've been writing in my real journal so much lately is b/c I want my loved ones to have something they can read in MY handwriting so that if something happens, they'll have that. I'm so glad my Mom kept a journal for a short time in her life so that I have that to hold on to. It was great to read it and get to know her as Vicki and not as Momma. I never got that chance.
I think that I may start writing letters again... that sounds like fun!
