Alaina this is just for you! It is going to be extremely long and should take up a good portion of class for you!
Yesterday, I went to Louisville to see my cousin Travis open up his baseball season for the Toledo Rockets. I was really excited because I had the weekend off so it was the perfect opportunity for me to go see him. I love going to the games and I think I could live at the ballpark for the rest of my life and be happy (of course, it would have to be down south). Anyway, Grandma mentioned she might come down but I didn't think she would. Late Thursday night, she called and said her alarm was set for 630am and they were heading down. I was so thrilled. I haven't seen Grandma since December. So, Friday I had to work until 8 (but that turned into 9 as has been the trend lately), therefore I couldn't go to the game on Friday. I woke up Saturday morning and headed to Louisville. It was a quick drive and the weather was gorgeous for the end of February. It was about 52 degrees and sunny. Everytime I cross the bridge to Louisville, I like the city better. There is just so much to do there and so many cool, little farm towns outside of the city. Kentucky fascinates me as well, much like Georgia. I think if someone offered me a job in Louisville today, i'd definately move there.
Anyway, the game was fun, Travis did pretty well, hitting in one of the team's two runs. It was good to see him play again since he has redshirted the past two years. Grandma was hysterical as usual. One story from the game I must share.
Here is the set up: the bullpen for Toledo was in right field. It was just a fenced area and there was parking lot right by it. Grandma parked there and her boyfriend, Jon, was sitting in the car because he isn't much of one for baseball games.
Well, most the game we were sitting up by homeplate but it was in the shade which was considerably colder. I decided to go stand out in the right field seats in the sun to warm up and grandma came to check on Jon. Standing by the bullpen, there were four University of Lousiville students (all male). They were cooking hot dogs on a small charcoal grill and three of them had 3 plastic pitchers of beer in their hands. They were yelling at the Toledo people warming up in the bullpen. Grandma wasn't thrilled about this so being the social gal she is, she went to talk to them. Before I know it, she is calling me over to introduce me to these boys. They are talking to her and the conversation was just hystercial.
Finally, she asks for a hot dog. The one guy gets her a bun and tells her to pick a hotdog, she does, and he fixes it for her. She then complains he put too much mustard on and the guy was like, ok, ill get you another bun. I don't think he realized who he was dealing with. She refused the second bun because she said she would just put it on the other hot dog. The kid is like, what? She said the first one was for her boyfriend and she needed one for her. Another kid pipes in, "you're boyfriend? i don't even have a girlfriend?" Hysterical.
She gets her hotdogs and thanks them. The one who served her told her, "Make sure you tell your boyfriend he is a lucky man." haha.
Then, as we walk away, she says "oh, but now i am going to be thirsty."
The boys shout, "go have some beer, the keg is over there."
Sure enough, these four ingenious boys put a pony keg in a tub, buried it in ice, and stuck it in the right field stands. I couldn't believe it. I am sure that is the first and last time I'll ever see someone sneak a keg into a baseball game. That was definately the highlight of the game.
Post Toledo losing, Grandma, Jon, and I went to the Riverboat to do some gambling. Of course, i gambled very little and on Grandma's money. The art of a casino amazes me and I think someday if I go back into journalism, I want to do a feature on it. I think gambling, casinos, and poker especially are bigger and more popular now, more than ever, so maybe i'll start writing a book now. Anyway, the boat was cool and it was so big. I couldn't believe i was on ship.
Like most casinos, they had free pop, but this one had fountains to serve yourself. Well, there went the Lent resolution right out the door. And Grandma brought me cookies, so that was part two of Lent broken. The only thing I've stayed strong with is Taco Bell. I'll start again tomorrow I suppose.
Following, my gambling experience in Southern Indiana, i've decided that I like the Windsor casino better because the Canadian money doesnt seem real, but putting an American $5 bill in a machine is a little to realistic for me.
I drove back to Bloomington with plans of going to Hairbangers Ball, but of course, people backed out on me and other stuff happened, so it didn't work out, as is the story of my life lately. Steve came through though and invited me to the Vid for a intense game of darts. This time we won, thanks to his 6 bullseyes in the end. Next, we headed up to Nick's where I saw one of my professors for the second weekend in row, ha. I came home and Mike, my roommate, and I bonded over pizza. It was definately the stereotypical college night - beers at the bar and pizza late in the am. Will I be running tomorrow? You betcha.
Speaking of tomorrow, it is the Michigan State vs IU game here in Btown. This is the game I've been looking forward to all year, I can't wait!!
As far as everything else, school is school and the next two weeks are going to be hardcore. I am really going to have to stay on top of things and be super efficient. I need to stay ahead and get my grades up, so I can raise that godforsaken GPA. Working a lot of hours at Promptcare isn't going to help the situation, but that's what happens when you request half a month off.
I've verified i will not be taking classes this summer, unless I want to take stats just to get it out of the way, but if i take it in the fall, i will only have 12, maybe 15 credit hours anyway. This summer is going to be focused on taking the GRE, getting my EMT license, grad apps, and working. Fun, right? It actually sounds a whole lot better then last summer. I really want to get some hours running EMT in this summer, but I would like travel, supervise at the ballpark, work Nascar, and keep Promptcare too. I'd also like to go home for a few weeks. I've really just got a lot on my plate (what else is new?). I need to just focus on school now though and worry about that later, hopefully everything will fall into place.
I've started looking at grad schools but haven't made a definate list of where I am going to apply. Duke is very intriguing though I don't think I am qualified. I also talked to someone about Austin, Texas being a very good city for sports medicine which is what i ultimately would like to do. Realistically, i think MCO is where I will end up. A PA told me that the 24-27 months of PA school are the hardest thing Ill probably ever do. You live, breathe, and bleed school. Awesome. I also need to start getting recommendations and what not. Applications are a long, hard, and expensive process.
Ok, after this insanely long entry at 445am, I must get to bed. I've got an 12 oclock date with Assembly Hall.
