You wander into a new town, and you feel out who's who, what's what, where the safe places are, how things work. Basic survival tactics, in a world like this one -- you have to be able to work out the lay of the land quickly. And if you wander enough, you get good at it.
Unless you're Tom. See, Tom's approach is generally more of the "wander in, find someplace where you won't get eaten, and bed down." And even though he's heard that Chicago is a pretty safe city -- why change something that works?
He's wandered into town from the southwest. His backpack sits high on his back, and the ratty jacket he's wearing isn't really thick enough to keep out the wind. It also rides up a little to expose the gun tucked into his waistband.
Tom himself looks -- pretty much totally lost.
