So, I'm working, sort of. Last day of work for the year. Nobody's around, and what I've left for this day are the mind-numbingly tedious tasks -- like cleaning up the "track changes" mess in a purchase spec, which could easily be done by a trained duck. Every couple of pages I'm giving myself the reward of reading some Yuletide fics. My favorites ( Read more... )

Regrettably, I've never actually had any Jeeves and Wooster canon (so, all I know about them is what I've gleaned from cultural references and crossovers with fandoms I'm actually familiar with. There seem to be quite a few good Yuletide fics this time around from fandoms I do not frequent. Sad...

I never actually liked Jeeves books (I much prefer Psmith :) I *do* heartily recommend the Fry&Laurie TV series. My husband and I ended up renting all the seasons and watching all 24 episodes in several evenings. One could watch it on the originally intended level (comedy about an obstinate bachelor not wanting to have his freedom restricted by a wife) or one could interpret it (and Fry and Laurie make it *very* easy) as a tragicomedy of sorts about a gay couple and the shit they have to go through and wheedle out of just to keep their tenuous hold on the domestic bliss they organized for themselves. In either case, a damn good series.

Heh! Well, if ever I have the opportunity to see this miniseries, I'm sure I'll watch it from precisely this perspective!

There's a point in either the last episode or one of the last episodes where... well, let's just say my husband actually gasped when he saw it. He interpreted the scene in a very, very different light than the makers intended it. He thought the comedy series, which was so light-hearted all that time, suddenly turned super-tragic and quite dark. But then they cut to the next scene, and he was all like, phew: magical realism saves the day.
