I just want to share something *so cool* that happened to me this morning.
We're one big happy Hammie family, with 3 Syrians between us in the house and have locally become known as "the hamster people", we'll occasionally babysit for hamsters as well as we're students and some people go home for the weekend. This is how we met Beth and her two Robo hamsters. Having being told they were both girls by a pet shop owner (that we don't patron any more) Fizz and Wizz happily lived together for a while. And then Fizz started getting fat and Wizz made a dash for freedom and hasn't been seen since. As I'm sure you can tell by now, yeah Wizz was a boy. So babies! Babies have grown up really well, and we've sexed them as best we can and keep on checking to make sure they're all boys or or girls. My flatmate has got all of the boys and Beth's keeping all of the girls with mummy.
Anyway, there's one runty one in the litter, appropriately named "runty" and we look at her teeth and they've all grown in crooked. This is probably a genetic lottery thing, we don't think Mummy and Daddy were related but they came from a big "hamster mill" according to the owner of the store (yet again we don't go there any more) So we ring round vets, and it's pretty damn hard to find a vet who'll even look at her teeth as she's a small hamster and she's an exotic. We eventually found one, and they have a Friday drop in session between 9-10am. Fantastic, so we bundle her off and take her this morning. They give no promises but we'll give it a go. I went with Beth because she didn't want to hold her while she had her teeth clipped.
The vet was amazing, they managed to clip her teeth down so she can hopefully chew things a bit more. The clippers were bigger than her mouth and they still managed to do it! Obviously it may be a life long thing for her, especially if they grow back in wonky still but it was completely amazing to see them do this to a hamster that's smaller than a 2p piece. Runty weighs 10 grams to give you an idea of size.
SPA Vets in Gloucester is amazing, and incredible value for money, it cost just under £10 to get her teeth done. I know if either of my two Syrians have any problems I will be taking them there without doubt. The coolest thing I've helped out in all year by far! Just so amazing!
