Breast Cancer 3-Day, aftermath

October 12, 2009

Though we surely would have enjoyed sleeping until mid-afternoon, Mom woke us early because she'd booked us a couple's massage over at Massage Envy. ZOMG that felt good, and was so very much needed. Between that and a trip to the Columbia Athletic Center to avail ourselves of the blissfully warm therapy pool and the hot tub, I had regained much of my normal walking ability by the afternoon. My right ankle flexors still hurt substantially, but I was no longer hobbling like an old, crippled woman. Thank you, Mom! *mwah*

We spent the rest of the afternoon hanging out with my folks until it got to be time to go to BWI to catch our flight home. Mom took us there a little later than we would have preferred, mainly because packing all my stuff proved slightly challenging. However, we had just enough time...or so we thought.

Here begins the tale of travel woe. FAA rules now require passengers to be checked in by 30 min. before their flights, and luggage and passengers may now no longer be permitted to travel on separate planes. But here's the rub -- our airline (Continental, I think it was) had its own policy requiring passengers to check in 45 min. prior to departure. When we tried to check in at kiosk = 43 min. prior. The system locked us out, and OF FUCKING COURSE the only 3 check-in attendants were busy with customers who needed 10-15 min. worth of time to help. So, by the time we got someone to help us, there was absolutely no way we were getting on our flight. ARRRRGH.

Moreover, the desk staff were not especially helpful at first. They asked if we had a way to get to National -- uhhhh...no, we didn't, not immediately. I called my folks to see if they could return to BWI and take us to DC instead. Dad was prepared to do so, but then the airline staff came through for us and several other people in the same situation by arranging for a shuttle to take us there.

Fortunately for us, we made it to DC in plenty of time to check in, call my parents to assure them that we were fine, and get a couple of cocktails and some food before boarding our flight home. The rest of our journey home went off without a hitch, and thank goodness for that, as I was super-tired and was sore and hobbling again by that point. I probably wouldn't have coped well with any further problems.

Fortunately again for me, I'd already thought to take another day off from work to recover. I slept a lot the next day. Mmmmmmm, sleep.

d.c., bc3d, family, travel, angst, sweetie
