Baitcon's a-coming

Today Trowa and I helped JB gather together stuff for Baitcon and stage it in centralized locations. This includes some of the leftover wedding dinner supplies -- plastic plates, cups, and cutlery, plus hot cups and napkins. Yay, that stuff will be out of the house. :-} Too bad Baitcon has no need of styrofoam clamshell takeaway containers!

JB had begun on this task before Trowa and I had emerged from the bedroom, and he was cleaning up a large, nasty, brown stain on the tile near the sliding glass door at the back of the kitchen. Turns out that a large bag of onions, hidden and forgotten, had decomposed all over the floor, emitting a horrific smell and attracting flies. However, that may have deterred the ants who currently love Marlowe's wet cat food from finding and plundering the open box of confectioner's sugar that was on the floor nearby. :-b Um...thank goodness for small favors?

Needless to say, the new house rule is, "Never buy any more onions than you need RIGHT NOW."

I mostly managed to avoid the foray into the scary basement. Trowa brought up the last of our May Wah faux meat stuff from the chest freezer, which will be travelling to Baitcon next week. There was faux chicken and faux eel. I cooked the last of our sushi rice and pan-cooked the faux eel, and he finished the rice with rice wine vinegar and used it to make nigiri with the eel. I'm sure the omnivorous sushi lovers reading this are shaking their heads, but it was actually quite tasty. The texture of the eel was far, far better than most of the other faux seafood I've tried, and it uses seaweed for the eel skin to give it a seafoody flavor. It also has the proper sauce to go with it. Now I am full of rice and faux eel. I would buy that product again.

Must inventory the kitchen to make sure I have the ingredients I need for various Baitcon foodstuffs. I have all the Thin Mints I need for my Wafer-Thin Mint ice cream, but I need fresh ginger and limes for my ginger-lime sorbet, enough sugar to make a fair bit of simple syrup for my sorbet and Trowa's I <3 Huckleberry sorbet, snickerdoodles to crumble into my snickerdoodle ice cream (unless I feel studly enough to make them from scratch for this purpose, which I'm not sure I am), and whatever it takes to make the mini scones I'd like to contribute to kimberlogic's midnight tea party. I'll also be making the vegetarian meal for Sunday afternoon, but that's part of the general Baitcon shopping.
