chapter 4 Chapter 5
“Ohayo Tat-chan 〜”
He opens his eyes. She’s still in his arms.
“Ma〜 I slept so well. And you?”
Actually he also slept well. It’s quite nice to wake up watching a smiling face too. Some noise disturbs them.
“Hum… Someone’s at the door. Wait I’ll see what they want.”
“Yosh 〜I’ll get breakfast ready then,” she says, sparkling all around.
***
“Delivery for Ueda-san. I need your signature” the postman explains.
***
Ueda doesn’t quite understand what happens next. He’s now outside his flat and the man starts to attack him. Shit. Why is that happening again? This time he’s ready to fight back but after a while he just feels he can’t go on. The man is strong. He falls on the ground.
“Tat-chan 〜 what are… Hands off!”
She jumps on the guy and has him back off.
“Sumeragi-sama?! Kuso -”
He flights. Ueda is too surprised to think.
“You know him?” he asks.
“No, but apparently he knows me….” she says, seriously. “Let’s go inside and take care of your injuries.”
***
“Ouch! Be more gentle!” he whines.
“Stop being such a baby! You’re a boxer, ne? so it’s not like it’s the first time you get injured.”
“But never like that!?”
She starts laughing and it eases things.
“Chiaki-chan, I’m wondering…”
He can see she’s smiling at him.
“I like it when you say Chiaki-chan” she explains.
“Well, actually earlier I heard the man using -sama. Does it mean you’re a kind of… er… of celebrity among fairies?”
She laughs a little louder.
“I don’t think so, no.”
She’s still sparkling and he’s not sure he understands. But what he understands is that she doesn’t want to speak about it so he doesn’t add anything more.
“Here you go!” she concludes while packing the first aid kit.
“Thanks Chiaki-chan”
“You’re welcome 〜 Ma 〜 that’s quite a puzzled look on your face…”
“I’m just wondering what those guys want and why they’re after me.”
The fairy is staring at him and she takes his face in her hands.
“You really want to know?”
He nods.
“Ok. Well, it’s just a guess though… but as the guy seemed to know who I was, I’d think that they’re after your… eyes!”
“Eeh!?” he exclaims.
She’s still holding his face.
“Your eyes” she repeats. “Because they can see fairies - and some other creatures too I suppose. They are in heavy demand in the occult world.”
He can’t believe it and to be honest he’s even starting to panic a little. As if reading what’s on his mind, the fairy adds:
“Don’t worry I will protect you.”
***
“There’s nothing like a nice warm coffee to shape yourself.”
She smiles and hands him a cup of coffee.
“Thanks.”
“You’re welcome. Feeling ok?” she asks.
He nods.
“I think I am…”
She looks at him and seems deep in thoughts as if struggling with herself.
“I’m not coming with you today” she explains, “do you think you’ll be ok?”
He doesn’t know what to answer. On the one hand, he should feel relieved (he won’t have to endure her bouncing everywhere) but on the other hand she saved him again…
“Don’t worry Tat-chan. I won’t be long and you just have to call if you need my help, ne?”
“Ok.”
She pats his head (that’s a new one!).
“Have a nice day Tat-chan.”
And she disappears.
***
Back from work in the evening he finds the flat empty. He didn’t see her today and wonders what she’s been up to. This fairy is quite weird really…
***
He feels a hand running along his hair. He opens his eyes.
“Chiaki-chan?”
“Gomen. I didn’t mean to wake you up.”
He sits up and can see she doesn’t look her usual self.
“Chiaki-chan” he repeats, “something the matter?”
He realizes he’s actually really worried to see her in such a state.
“I’m ok…”
He can see she’s trying to smile but something prevents her from offering him her usual twinkling smile. So he just can’t help but taking her in his arms.
