Party time woes.

So... yesterday was the second annual get together for my apartment complex.

They have one every year in order for neighbours to get to know each other and stuff. We missed the one last year and so a lot of the neighbours insisted we make this one.

So at 8 pm we went downstairs and were stopped at the gate by a security guard brandishing a rubber stamp. He insisted on stamping it on our hands as apparently last year there were a lot of gate crashers. So I reluctantly had him stamp 'Entry Pass' on the back of my hand and he let us enter.

I gave my Mom a dirty look and told her that if I was to be branded atleast it could have been a pretty girl's name..

So we went around and I was pleasantly pleased by what the organisers had done. There was a DJ, buffet and a small stage put up for performers. They had also put up a lot of balloons that I dearly wanted to pop. Yeah.. i'm wicked like that... so sue me..

So me and my Mom started mingling with the neighbours, most of whom i'd never seen before and most of them were very nice. Then suddenly this old man orders everybody to sit down. I told him I had been sitting the whole day and was fine standing, thankyouverymuch. But he insisted. So we sat down.

What followed was a 15 minute speech by him about how he was so happy about the party and all.. and there were a few lame jokes thrown in for good measure. I finally found my cure for insomnia. I asked my mother who the hell he was and she told me he was the chairman of the apartment complex. I privately thought that we really must have been badly off to elect him.. but oh well.

After the speech he asks us to stand up and form a circle. By this time nobody was really in the mood.. We just wanted the music to start and to get to know one another. But he insisted. So we reluctantly formed a circle, which wasn't to his liking because it wasn't perfectly round. And then he asked us to hold hands. I started wondering, then.. whether this was some nightmare from my school days.

Anyway... just when  was wondering what he'd ask us to do next he started giving another speech. I just walked away and most of the other people did the same. He started yelling about disrespect to him and mysteriously the microphone went silent... What could have happened? We may never know.. :p

So the food starts arriving and the performances by the children of the building start and this guy starts yelling for silence and for us not to talk at the back. I told the secretary of the building that I had thought this was meant to be a party. She gave me a long suffering look that told me all I needed to know. Poor woman.. having to deal with him on a daily basis.

Anyway.. the little ones started performing and they were quite good too... but after a while I left. Watching children dance really isn't my idea of a saturday evening.

I later decided that it would be the last annual party that i'd ever attend.
