I hated the unstable lump of garbage so much than when I realized it was dead, my first emotion was relief. I hated it so much I'm tempted to give up on smart phones completely.
I'm copying my files off it now. The Kies software from Samsung will bypass the "I won't let you access the phone unless you disable the screen lock" feature if the screen is smashed. It's funny that the first useful thing about the phone involves the device being smashed. I also appreciate the irony that if an identity thief steals your Samsung phone he can bypass this rudimentary security feature by smashing the screen.
I now regret the fact that I never just wiped the device and installed CyanogenMod. I didn't want to void the warranty!
The irony is that the device was FINALLY starting to behave after the last OS upgrade. Of course I had nine months of unstable, flaky behavior before they released a somewhat stable OS, and I had to install the Nova launcher to reduce overall crashes, so I'm not as heartbroken as if they had, for example, shipped with a stable OS.
Update: Files backed up. I'm using Kies to do a factory reset of the phone. This will let me recycle it without fear of identity theft.
Update: I contacted T-Mobile. The damage is not covered by the warranty, but I have insurance on the line. This means I could get an identical phone for $150. The insurance doesn't help with getting a different phone. I have NO interest in getting another Samsung.
