Work, Work, Work

Accounting screwed up, and almost cost us the domain name that runs all our student logins, the report system, the exam system and several support functions.

The site was down for a few days because accounting thought "renewing"the site through "Domain Registry of America" (BOOO! HISS!) was enough.

I ended up moving all the code to another domain.

Funny thing is, I'd recommended this procedure in the past and had mapped out the steps necessary.

After over an hour in meetings (During which customer service was flooded with complaint calls as ALL our sites were dead) I was given the reluctant green light to fix the problems. It's amazing how much time management can spend wringing their hands in frustration and woe when the solution has been spelled out.

Took me about an hour, and I had another developer run an automated search and replace to clean up the residual references to the old URL.

And THEN I found out our webmaster had no understanding of how DNS works. While most people don't know how DNS works, for our webmaster to have no clue, and need it explained to him in a meeting, was kind of pathetic.

If Dilbert is reading this, I'd like to offer to switch jobs with him!
