Hacking Borderlands

As some of you may or may not know, I picked up Borderlands on a fluke, when it first came out. Like everyone else, I was shocked at how good it was, and then spent hours sucked into the original game as well as the expansion packs. Recently, Borderlands shipped for the Mac. Of course, we know this means I picked it up. Its one of my favourite games after all. The missus supported this plan, as she is a fan of this game as well. However, I’ve cleaned up in the Xbox 360 version. I really wanted the Mac version so that I could tank my way through it and see all the stuff I hadnt seen before. So, I decided to hack my game.

The first trick was to figure out what values to change. Okay. Easy enough. The installer dumps a file in your preferences called Feral Interactive. In that folder, are two other folders. Firstly, the Borderlands folder contains a foler called MacInit. In it is the WillowGame.ini file. this is the file that needs to get edited for things like god mode, available weapon slots, and enable friendly fire for both you, and the NPC’s. This was the easy part.

Next, there was editing my character. I created a save game, and then located it in the previously mentioned Borderlands folder in the SaveData folder. I then copied it and dumped it to my bootcamp shared folder. I loaded up VMware Fusion, and downloaded one of the many numerous generic trainers for Borderlands. I loaded my save game (Save0001.sav) into the trainer, and it loaded up as expected. Yes, the fact that Feral Interactive wrapped the PC version of Borderlands in Cider instead of reinventing the wheel, paid off in spades. I tweaked my character, and then put the modified save back in place. I quit Fusion, and loaded up Borderlands. It worked. My character was level 50, with 200 backpack slots, my skill tree was maxed, and I was capable of massive destruction. excellent!

Yes, that easy.
