I must admit, I am relieved. It does me well to know he has a dear friend from home with whom he can relate. He doesn't speak much of his troubles.

That's not uncommon. Kratos never discussed his troubles, not even with his closest companions. [In fact, he's willing to bet even Anna didn't know the full extent of Kratos' problems.]
