2009 Fanfic In Review (Writing Meme)
Of course I'm late! Why should this year be any different?
I wrote 72640 words last year, most of them fic (with a few book reviews in there along the way). I think I hit an all-time high on new random-fandoms, even if several of them were single stories: Pushing Daisies, The Hurt Locker, Kingdom Of Heaven, Burn Notice, The True Meaning Of Smekday, Terminator: SCC, and Fringe. \o/
I really wanted to be writing longer Supernatural stories, but that got to be very hard when canon veered way from what I was interested in. The Sam/Dean Slash especially took a hit (with at least 5 WIPs cluttering up the hard-drive).
All in all, there were 15 SPN Gen Stories and 20 SPN Gen Drabbles, and only 4 SPN Slash Stories and 25 SPN Slash Drabbles. I'm seriously considering reworking some of those Slash drabbles into longer stories this coming year.
The Prison Break fandom has really shrunk, and the 7 Gen stories I wrote got very little attention. The 8 Slash ones were luckier, and the single PB Het piece too. How I miss the old days. :(
Only 4 new Iron Man stories this year (the epic Tony/Rhodey arc was finished last year). 5 for Die Hard 4 (including a Sweet Charity story), 2 for J2 RPS, and one each for Chuck and Reaper. There will be more Chuck next year-I promise!
On to the Meme-ish questions:
If you were a tree, what kind of Did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted? More overall (I committed to 50K for findyourwords and thought that was stretching it, but I hit 72K total). But not as much Sam/Dean as I wanted to!
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January 2009?
The Hurt Locker (the movie wasn't even out yet!), The True Meaning Of Smekday, and Kingdom Of Heaven. Those last two were comment-fic entries.
Did you take any writing risks this year? (See above for unexpected pairings, etc.) What did you learn from them?
That 10-character/15-word fic meme wound up being virtually all crossovers (sometimes bizarre combinations), and seemingly impossible pairings, both of which are hard for me. Yet the Walter/House/John McClane slashy piece turned out great (how?), and in several of the others the universes crossed over a lot better than I'd expected they would.
The Pushing Daisies story and The True Meaning Of Smekday stories were both risky, because they relied on such distinctive narrative styles. Though "vivid" voices usually make writing easier for me (see Walter above), a vivid narrative style makes things harder.
Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year?

Finish my Chuck/Casey challenge (3 stories left)
Write the last 2 Prison Break Gen stories for philosophy_20.
Best story this year:
This one's always hard for me to judge, especially because I write SO much in so many different fandoms. But I'll go with Our Dreams Unbound (Prison Break, Michael/Lincoln, R), the pre-series Sweet Charity story I wrote. Lots of emotion and past/present/foreshadowing, and a cozy atmosphere.
Story most underappreciated by the universe:
Hard Lines (SPN, Gordon drabble) or any of the Prison Break Gen stories. :(
Most fun story:
Don't Come Knockin' (SPN, Gen), featuring Rufus' unique idea of good-time Halloween fun. Oh, the epic crabbiness! And the awesomeness of it all. ;)
Most sexy story:
Holding Up The Sky (SPN, Sam/Dean, NC-17) - this one is full of that need it now urgency that always gets me going.
Story with single sexiest moment:
Slow Ride (To Break You In) (SPN, Sam/Dean, NC-17). Sam getting himself ready for Dean (and winding Dean up in the process) was scorching.
"Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story:
Sweet Talk (SPN, Bobby/Rufus Slash Drabble)? But I couldn't help myself. And once it was over, it seemed almost plausible instead of crack-ish. :0
Hardest story to write:
Out In The Country, No-One Can Hear You Scream (Die Hard 4, John/Matt, PG-13). That was my Sweet Charity story, and because so much of it was dialogue and I introduced so many characters, it took about 4 months to finish and clocked in at nearly 8000 words (a record for me).
Easiest story to write:
The World Is Burning (Terminator: SCC, Sarah, Ellison, Gen, PG). Of the non-drabbles, this one was the one that almost wrote itself. It had every thought or feeling in it that had lingered with me after the series' finale.
Biggest Disappointment:
The difficulty of getting those epic Sam/Dean stories to come out. I miss that like crazy.
Biggest Surprise:
Alpha Males And Also-Rans, the Fringe/House/Die Hard crossover that was supposed to be threesome slash. It was barely slashy, but writing Walter was fun, and the end result was hilarious.
Most Unintentionally Telling Story:
Usually I have nothing in this category, but this year it's The Soldier's Other Son (SPN, Sam, pre-series Gen). And yeah, that's all I'm going to say. :0
