First, with American Idol going on weekly in my house (because Lauren is 10) and all the pop music I just can't stand, I can't help but think of the contrast between that and the original Britain's Got Talent. The American version is looking for new concert sensations-- often the better performers beat the better singers, and when I think of all the groups I really like from the late 60s-early 70s that makes it worse, because who cares what they look like when they can work a song so well? But for a really vivid example of the difference,
this is the audition video of Paul Potts singing an opera aria on the British show. That would go nowhere with an American TV audience, and what a shame! That aria will make the hair stand up on the back of your neck, if it doesn't make tears well up in your eyes as well.
Now onto the other kind of amusements. For some truly bizarre humor, there's this animated icon
gekizetsu owns containing a faked-up phone conversation between Bjork and P. Diddy-- that she kindly linked in a comment down below so you don't have to hunt for it anymore, Mwah-ha-ha-ha! Refresh this page if you want to start it over again. The phrase "Pickle pickle pants on fire!" will not leave me alone now!
Then, if for some reason you have never watched these, YouTube has a great collection of Terry Tate, Office Linebacker videos. Violent, hilarious, not always politically correct (or sometimes enforcing the political correctness) all waiting right here:
Office Linebacker,
OSPN History of Terry Tate,
Sensitivity Training,
Vacation, and the inevitable
Draft Day.
My favorite is the guy shaped like a pencil who commits an Office Infraction, and then this red blur zooms sideways and powers both of them offscreen.
We've got people at our office who dump recyclables into the garbage can, and sometimes I wish we had our own Terry Tate! Because I get tired of doing it the nice way. ;)
