assorted things from a trip to the black rock desert

The 6 from Bishop to the Nevada border had lots of things that, for some reason, entertained me.
  • The sign saying "Provincetown, MA 3206 mi"
  • The sign that said highway cleanup was provided by the Dillinger Gang
  • the TJs Market sign that advertised "Fresh Sarcasm"
  • and the sign proudly proclaiming it's status as the Grand Army of the Republic Highway.
The other thing i jotted down in my phone was that Vons gas was not only the cheapest in Bishop, but that it had a 3 cent discount or so on top of that if you used your Vons Card or phone number  (323-FUCK-OFF should work for Vons or most market cards.  thanks linda!)

Actually up there, i dunno.  It was just like camping except we had a bouncy house that random strangers would come visit in the middle of the night.  And some other friends were in some other part of the campground that i had to drive to visit.

some of many highlights:

getting to hang out w/ Megs some more and not talk at all about regional stuff while doing it finally.

watching a 2 year old drive a car around camp, constantly steering it at people's tents.

getting to see the 19th century covered wagon in person

driving around the upper playas past the wagon

seeing Cooder (?), a flatbed porta bar with a Flying Nun type shade structure follow us over some decently tricky terrain all the way up to the top of the island in the Ben Hur playa

being able to sit and enjoy a view of the mountains around the playa unmarred by an orange line at the bottom

not being able to even see a hint of my camp from other camps

driving around at 60 mph and just seeing where the car wanted to go

not really a highlight, but it was cool seeing the man all boxed up and waiting for us to start screwing and wiring him up in a bit over a month

ok... did a touch of research on the Grand Army of the Republic Highway.  Guess it starts at Provincetown, MA and used to end in Long Beach (down what's now the 14, 5 & 110) and was the longest transcontinental highway.

Kinda sad i'm only on it for 30 miles, or 1% of it. Following it east on Google maps makes it seem like that'd be an interesting drive "some day".
