I hope it works

Well, that was fun. I just bullshitted my way through a one page paper (single spaced) for my Software Engineering class. We were supposed to draw on either our experience or research from the internet. I didn't really know what to look up and didn't want to spend a billion years doing research, so I just started writing. The assignment was to write on one of the Problems with Working Systems. I choose the one that said that the complexity to fix bugs increases geometrically the longer a system is in production because that seemed the most fun and accurate.

Next up, I'll be watching Kung Fu Hustle on my laptop since I don't have an actual TV. But first, to tell the tale of the upgrade that wasn't.

When I went to sleep Friday night/Saturday morning, everything seemed to be working with the Windows 2000 Professional upgrade that I performed on my computer. Unfortunately, it seems that my LiveJournal entry proclaiming that my computer is working nicely after the upgrade attracted the attention of Obstaquatle. Saturday evening at around 5 PM, I fired up my computer and received an error message far worse than the dreaded blue screen of death.

"Operating System not found,"
it sneered at me.

I sighed, expecting this to much to be surprised. I tried restarting it and pulling the power on the computer after it was shut off and then turning off in the hopes that it would fix itself while it was lacking power but no such luck. Then I put the Windows 2000 CD back in the CDROM drive and found out that there was a repair option.

I tried to repair it, three times, with no luck. Finally, I decided that the repair just wasn't going to work and told it to install Windows 2000. This took a while, but eventually did work. I'm having to reinstall all my programs, but surprisingly, my data wasn't lost. I guess this is what happens when I break the one cardinal rule of computing in Windows that I created for myself: never to do an upgrade. I've heard too many horror stories to actually attempt them myself and now I have one to add to the realm of upgrade horror stories.

And frankly, I'm tired of it. So once I'm done using this computer, I'm getting myself a Mac.

Quoth the Evan,
Nevermore.
