Gamgees Gotta Stick Together: Halfast Gamgee

Aug 21, 2003 00:55

Riding horse and cart, the copper-haired hobbit leaves his smial in the North Moors, rides down the road to Dwaling, past the Brockenborings and the North Farthing Stone, crosses the Bywater, and precedes into Hobbiton.

Ole Cousin Samwise's daughter Primrose ain't doing so well, they said. Not one bit. And here are the Gamgees now, spread far and wide. Biggest family in the Shire at one time . . . now there's no one about to see to the lass but her second cousin here. Not a one.

They say it's as if she's turning to stone. Now that's not something I ever heard tell happen to hobbitfolk. No sireee!

I reckon I should have stayed on in Back End--then I wouldn't be taking the long road now--but it was getting a right bit too crowded for this ole ent-minded hobbit, and no, I do refuse to use them strike-outs where everybody and his mother can read them, and that's that I was missing the north lands after all the digging and building Mirabella set me and my lads and lasses to this summer throughout the Shire.

A shame Elly's not here. She'd take care of her sister whatever the cause is, I'm sure of that. But I'll see what I can do for the lass. Hope Mirabella gets back from Lake Town soon.

Rides up Bagshot Row, turns up onto the path to Bag End, goes around behind the hill until he reaches Back End, dismounts, settles his horse, and goes on in.
