I think this is all you need about Doctor Who: time-travelling alien runs about in space, has occasional human side-kicks ("companions"); more specific: is currently sort-of married to a mostly-human kind of mercenary lady named River Song who shows up sporadically and in the wrong order, and that UNIT is a pseudo-military institution which often worked with the Doctor in the past and more occasionally in the present to defend Earth from alien threats.
