One more day!

Happy day before elections, everyone! I admit I'll be happy when it's over. I'm well-informed, and I like being well-informed, but the news has been nothin' but elections for the past month or so, and I'm quite looking forward to hearing stories that confirm my hunch that there's, you know, a world out there ( Read more... )

Like Mr. Wisp, I only have opinions, but they are strong opinions.

Kari Reed is a no-no for me, as well, both because of the homeschooling and because she doesn't want more money going to the schools. I agree that more money by itself won't solve the schools' problems, but I can't imagine major change happening without money. But she's not as scary as these three:

  • Doug Mann, school board: "The so-called racial acheivement gap reflects the quality of education to which students have access. Nationwide, two-thirds of new teachers work in schools where black students are over-represented."
  • Tim Tanglestad, Minnesota Supreme Court associate justice seat 3: "I believe that justice is served when judges fear God and love the people"
  • Rahn Workcuff, Hennepin County Soil and water supervisor seat 3: "I strongly agree that a marriage should be only between a man and a woman. I am not in favor of same sex marriages. I strongly agree that all MN residence should have affordable health insurance. even if it means new or added cost to businesses. I strongly agree that we dont need anymore increase in taxes, we are all ready being taxed to death. I strongly agree that an increase of funding should be put towards educating our children in grade k - 12. I strongly agree funding should be allocated toward natural resources conservation."

Is that last one verbatim?

If so, I would say that is the scariest thing I've ever seen :).

It's from his MyVote profile under 'most important issue'. It's especially scary for someone running for Soil and Water supervisor. Apparently gay marriage will not only threaten the integrity of 'traditional marriage', but the integrity of your soil.

I'm from the part of the country that coined the phrase "Katherine Harris crazy" so nothing really surprises me anymore :).

Maybe it's the water he's worried about? ;)

Yes, that's it. If he is not elected Soil and Water Supervisor, us sneaky queers will put teh gay into the Twin Cities water supply and make everyone pro marriage equality.

See, I knew you had a master plot all along ;).

The big catch slogan down here is Yes on 2; Protect Children.

Because really? Your marriage is such a threat to B (rolling my eyes). At this point, it doesn't appear that they'll have the 60% they need to amend the constitution with this rot, but given our general ability to be stupid in this state (Mel Martinez, anyone?) I'm not sure that I trust the polling numbers.

I've never understood that argument. When I think of things that threaten children, I'm thinking of, you know, terrible diseases and child molesters and parents who lock their kids in the car for three hours while they go to the strip club, and maybe Barney. I try to look at both sides of every issue, but I just cannot make a connection between marriage equality and child endangerment.

Unless we worry that some drunken reveler from a same-sex wedding is going to accidentally drop a pointy Tiffany wedding favor on some kid's head.

Apparently, the way they justify this is that we'd "have to teach same-sex marriage" in schools, thus exposing children to, um, yeah, I'm not sure what. They lose me on this one.

B has been reading about two mommies and two daddies since he was an infant. His favorite book is still Todd Parr's The Family Book. I don't see how teaching him that there are lots of different ways to be family is a bad thing.

This is not scary Dominionist Tim Tingelstad's first run for judge, either - he's still around, still creepy as fuck.

I remember reading that profile when I was researching for the primaries, and when I saw him again, I thought, How were people dumb enough to vote you through to this level?

I thought the same about a couple of the school board folks, too.

Not to mention the creepy expression he's wearing in his picture.

Yeah, I wasn't going to mention the picture. It's very 1930s Delta blues album cover.

Which, I don't know, maybe that's what some people are looking for in a Soil and Water supervisor.

Ooh, I ran into those last couple looking through profiles, and it made me glad I decided to research those races at the last minute. The homophobic jerkass running for soil supervisor especially freaked me out, too.

I'm a little distressed by the races where there weren't what I'd consider "good" choices.

Me, too. And I was sort of depressed by the number of races where there was no choice at all.
