YOU NEVER READ THE "MISS NELSON" BOOKS?!? But...but...they were ICONIC! And around when Donovan was in school, too :( Oh no, you never got to experience Miss Viola Swamp, the Meanest Substitute Teacher Ever!!! Okay, you need to hit up a library and check out "Miss Nelson Is Missing" and all of the sequels NOW. That's an order from someone older and shorter than you!

YES. DO. They're by the same guy who did the Stupids series and The Dumb Bunnies and all of those books, but unlike some of his stuff, the Miss Nelson series is actually pretty smart. They're like the Wayside School books, except for the picture book set. And with a teacher that makes Dolores Umbridge look nice. (Well...by kids' book standards)

For Book Day one year, my dad's school dressed up as book characters as voted by the kids, and while some of them picked characters just based on silliness (like the gym teacher as Tinkerbell and the principal as Tacky the Penguin), they all voted for my dad to dress up as Miss Viola Swamp. And apparently when he came in, some of the younger kids cried because they didn't recognize him without his facial hair and in white face paint and thought he was really her until he started talking. To this day he still is upset the kids thought he was like her. I think it's HILARIOUS.

XD Man, trying to imagine your dad in white face paint and drag...IDK, it's some mental image.

He could actually pull it off quite well when he was younger...he had hair down past his shoulders until I was 15 (wore it in a ponytail for work) and it used to be almost all jet black, so once he shaved his facial hair, he could do all sorts of girls for costumes. His Halloween outfits were always a hit at school.

XD Nice. I guess if my brother could pull off drag, your dad could.

Um...is #8 Into The Woods? That's the only other "deconstructing fairy tales" thing I can think of after Princess Tutu, at least that fits the description...

And on a similar vein, though I don't know if you've read it or not, is #18 The Importance of Being Earnest? (Again, only thing I can think of that matches but I'm rereading a bunch of Oscar Wilde right now and the "with the same name" as opposed to "USING the same name" makes me want to say that...)

Those are both right! \o/ XD Someone on my plurk got Into The Woods at about the same time you did, I think. And I've both read the play (for Intro to Theatre) and seen the movie version of The Importance of Being Earnest.
