I did a speech on Princess Tutu today in class. Wavered back and forth between that and doing a speech on the Rajputs, to the point where I was up until 4am last night debating it. Finally settled down and got it done. Speech went okay...but I was obviously unprepared, sadly. But my teacher commented that my enthusiasm always shows through in my speeches and makes them interesting, which is good....I need to find a socially relevant persuasive topic that I could have the same enthusiasm for...
I spent $90 on manga yesterday. Whoo, I feel...poor and rich at the same time. I got some pretty good stuff, I think:
Fruits Basket 18-19
Death Note 13: How To Read
Neon Genesis Evangelion 1-3
Ouran Highschool Host Club 1-2
So far the only ones I've read are 1&2 of NGE. It's very good--I like the art a lot, shonen action in manga tends to be very hard for me to follow, but it's very clear.
I can definately see why it seems like there's a bit of conflict about the manga in the fandom, though. (I mentioned that I might read the manga a while back in an NGE forum, and accidentally started a debate that lasted several pages. I quietly bowed out of that one.) Shinji is...much snarkier/huffier in the manga.
By that, I mean he's a bit of a snotty kid. Okay, he's downright bratty in some scenes! I couldn't blame Toji for punching him--actually, the part that I couldn't quite swallow was Toji actually feeling bad about it later! I mean, when you tell a guy he's responsible for your sister being injured, and his response is--with a small smile on his face--"What do you want me to do? Kneel down and beg for forgiveness?"
I almost cheered when Toji punched him. XD;; (I guess this shows that I don't like Shinji just for his looks, at least. I must enjoy mothering characters. Although that's almost along the lines of something Autor would say, and I like him...although I don't know if Autor comes across as quite that cold.
...Wait, no, his response to Duck's anger over starving Fakir is "It'll hone his mind this way. If he can't survive this, he has no hope of ever Story Spinning." Autor is that cold sometimes. He even throws a fit and asks "why should I?!" when Fakir comes to ask him for help to save the entire town. He's a brat, too.)
...Back on the subject of Toji, though, the way Viz translated his accent is...annoying the heck out of me. ADV gave Osaka a Brooklyn accent in the manga of Azumanga Daioh, too (Houston accent in the anime), but..it wasn't nearly as obnoxious. Every other word out of Toji's mouth is either awkward slang or written out to express his accent, like "dis" or "wonderin'" or...whatever. A little bit of that is fine, but when almost all of his speech is like that...it's nooot easy to read, and almost makes him come off as some parody of the "tough Brooklyn guy" stereotype. I don't think that's what Viz was going for.
Although, really, for all my nitpicks with the manga, so far it's still enjoyable, and I think I'm going to enjoy collecting and reading it, even if it's...odd. Hey, it's not nearly as bad as the Princess Tutu manga. The only thing that COULD'VE been worse about that one is if Fakir had Toji's accent.
...Okay, the image of Fakir saying "Stay da hell off da Network, ya Moron!" is really, really hilarious. We need a curse day where Fakir gets a bad, BAD Brooklyn accent. Manda, make it work!
(Wh-what about Duck with a Brooklyn accent? Oh man, I don' think I could even keep that up for long...)
You know, I've noticed something odd about stories I like. I've found that stories I find good, that stay with me...make me feel like I want to write.
The odd thing is, sometimes even bad stories do this to me. The Princess Tutu manga did. (Maybe that's why I actually enjoy it to some extent?)
I was going to do some free-writing thing on Autor, but I've lost my energy for it. (30 minutes of sleep does that to you, I suppose.) I might be able to get it up later. Not that it's really important, but--as I said, when I enjoy stories, I want to write, and the NGE manga is doing that to me, weird changes or no.
(It could be just me desperately trying to prove to myself that he's a separate entity from manga!Shinji. "Okay, so he's got issues with his father who employs Scary Shiny Glasses, but they're distinct characters, I tell you! Autor's...Autor's...smart! And, um, um...he....he likes his Dad! Kinda. Mostly. Sometimes. Maybe? And...and...I never did decide if I was going to change Johanna, did I?")
...Imma going to go check Poly. (..."Imma"? Ack, it's spreading! "Imma gonna go check on da RP.")
