though some of the middle school ones I read in high school and some of the high school ones, and A Midwife's Tale, Laurel Thatcher Ulrich was actually assigned in middle school. which was really odd.

Ditto. I'm pretty sure I read Mists of Avalon in middle school.

my 7th grade english teacher told me to read it because she had heard it was good and thought I might like it. Little did she know how adult it was...

That's a good point. I probably did read it then, too, since my 8th grade did a whole section on Arthurian legend. I just couldn't remember for sure, and I know I read it again in high school and that's when it resonated most with me.

I have a hard time remembering exactly what I read when. I know I was reading Shogun when the Space Shuttle blew up (the first time) so it must have been 6th or 7th grade. I also know it took me 9 months to read (=|) but I REALLY WANTED TO after watching the mini-series with my mom. I'm not sure she knew how adult it was, or if it would have mattered if she did.

Shogun! Yes! I loved that book, too. That book totally made me want to learn Japanese. :)
