Last night at about 9:00 a man came into my work (Tanya was in the back, and I was the only one at the counter.)

He looks tired, and he rests his arms on the counter as he takes of his dirty baseball cap.

He tells me his hitchhiking and he has no money. He asks if there are some dishes he can do for a sandwich.

I don't know what to say, so I tell him to wait a moment as I go in the back to ask Tanya what to do. She looks clueless for a second, then tells me to tell the man we can't do that. I knew we couldn't allow the man to work for food, but I didn't want to turn him down and send him away hungry. Then Tanya had a brilliant idea: we'd buy him a sandwich out of our tips.

As the man sat outside eating his sandwich, I turned to Tanya and said maybe we should bring him some water, too. Without saying anything, she made him a cup of ice water and brought it out to him. We saw him drink the whole cup in a couple of big gulps.

I helped another customer as the man was still out there eating his sandwich. I decided I would go out and give him the rest of my tips as soon as I was done helping the customer. I was planning on asking Tanya if she was interested in giving him the rest of her tips as well. But when I finished helping the customer, I looked outside, and he was gone.
