Day 6: Whatever Tickles Your Fancy

Let's talk a bit about Girl in the Fireplace.

Was I the only one who went away from that episode horribly confused? In the midst of that hype the Doctor had with Reinette, I found myself defending him because of the threat looming over her. He wouldn't just leave anyone if he could possibly fix the problem. But it ( Read more... )

Yeah, that's what I thought. Duh, she had a key... I don't remember her doing much to try and get him back or anything either. Ugh. Should just watch the ep again and shake my fist while saying "MOFF!!!" Might help. BUT maybe Rose didn't want to stay in the TARDIS because she'd already been carted home against her will once. So she skillfully avoided that "Not this shit again" moment.

but people get very mad at the Doctor for this episode
Logic doesn't win in fandoms. XD I find that funny, actually, because it's not like he'd never gotten himself unstuck from somewhere before. I can't remember actually being mad at him, but I remember that my defending him steadily turned sour as it went. lol

I am happy to watch Moffat write his own Doctor and his own companion
Oh yeah. I love Eleven and the story building around him. But there's no way Moff could have continued Ten's simply because Moff can't seem to wrap the story with a strong emotional undertone like RTD did. I respect both writers in their different styles, but in the end it's always the emotion that brings people back over and over again in fandoms instead of suspense that you only live once.

LOL That was always how I read it to be honest. Mickey does suggest they try and fly it, but Rose points out that she doesn't know how to.

Yes! I agree with this whole sentence and it accurately sums up how I feel about New Who. I did really enjoy series 5 and I like it when I watch it, but much of the fun was the suspense; s1-s4 on the other hand has the emotional resonance that keeps me coming back after, what, two years since JE aired?
