oh yes, I have high hopes indeed.
First of all, happy new year!
Secondly, how much to do you think it would cost to travel around europe for two weeks? I was speaking to one of my friends yesterday and we suddenly hit upon the idea of wandering round the continent for a bit during the summer. It costs £265 for a train ticket (including ferries) to take you round most of Europe for a month, and since I'm a blessed EU citizen the only visas I'll need to apply for will be the ones for Russia and the Ukraine (assuming of course we decide we can get that far in two weeks). So far our idea is to start off from brussels go via amsterdam up to either copenhagen (or if we're pressed for time berlin) from berlin to warsaw. From Warsaw, Riga, then St Petersberg, if we're not dying of exhaustion down to moscow, then Kiev/Krakow (we're still arguing which is the best route, I want to go the scenic route to Kiev) Then budapest, vienna, prague up to Munich to poke around bavaria for a bit, then home.
Sounds good on paper, but I'm slightly worried about the praticalities of it. Has anyone ever done something like this before? What was it like? How much did it cost? How long did it take you to get back to speaking terms with the person you went with? Basically, is it worth it?
I'm also slightly worried about the danger factor. I'm not worried about Western Europe, but whenever I mention that I'm going to Eastern Europe people always make comments, either about the mafia or being deaded in general. I'd be going with a bloke, which techincally lowers the danger aspect, but I know that we'll just scream 'Silly student backpackers' to anyone who so much as glances our way.
Can anyone recommend places to go to? We're trying to avoid places that we've been to before which means we won't know what to do when we're there, so any advice gratefully recieved.
Ok, thats my request for the day. I'm off to write an essay on Kant and try to debunk the cold-blooded git (Request 2: if any of you are feeling generous feel free to write it for me)
