5 Centimeters Per Second: this is a movie by Makoto Shinkai. if you've ever seen any Stuido Ghibli movies you know how amazing their coloring and backgrounds can be. this movie beat that. visually, this movie is beyond gorgeous. and it's very melancholic, which I always seem to be drawn to. if you haven't seen it, the movie is divided into three parts spanning a boy's life from grade/middle school to adulthood and his being sparated from his childhood girl friend whom he fell in love with. my favorite part is part three of the story which has very little dialogue and is mostly just a montage of images showing his life as an adult and how bitter he is. there's a song that plays through most of it called "One more time, One more chance" which just adds to the overall feel of loss. but the end turns out alright and he lets go of his memory of her, and she lets go of his. (I know it sounds totally sappy, but I like it)
Death Note: this is actually the only anime/manga that I've never actually kept up with that I list as a fandom. I could never really get into the story somehow. the artwork, however, is what really got me. it's very dark but very detailed and not ugly in the least. what got me at first was L and the way he sat in his chair, cause I sit like that and it made me happy. I left this fandom alone for a while and then picked it up again with my discovery of Mello. oh. dear. lord. he's what restarted it. but to be honest, I'm more interested in the untold stories in mangas and anime (it's always like that with me) and his life at Whammy's with L and Near and Matt is what I really like. besides, DN has some of the best fanart I've seen in a while ^_-
Kenpachi Zaraki: man oh man. I'm already grinning. the first time I ever saw Kenpachi was in the ending song during the Soul Society arc, "happy people". at this time the only Bleach episode that I had seen was episode 43 (when Ishida fights Mayuri) and I had only read the first 6 volumes of the manga and I had no idea who the hell this spiky-haired giant was. this had all started less than a year ago..and I gave Bleach a break until spring when I watched all the episodes up to 51 in time for Adult Swim's premier of episode 52. and during that Bleach marathon I had, that was when I saw Kenpachi's fight with Ichigo. and I saw him grin like a madman. I love his enthusiasm and I love that he just keeps grinning through it all (I've got a violent streak in me). and when they showed that bit of his past about him not having a name I just..I don't know..not having a name, as if your existence was that meaningless..just thinking about it tore my heart open. I also love that he found a companion in Yachiru, a little girl of all people.
the main thing is, though, that I kind of want to be like him. he's fearless. he'll stand up to anything. I'm a complete coward. no one ever taught me how to fight or defend myself, and it's not like anyone was ever there to defend me either so I've had to do it myself which ever way I could. but it always makes me so scared. and I hate it. but just watching him, I want to get stronger, want to stop being so scared of people. he was what boosted my courage up a bit...
Yachiru Kusajishi: well you can't love Kenpachi without loving Yachiru. I love that they're practically inseparable, stuff like that just makes me happy ^_^ ... even though I'd love to see her actually fight, I like watching her wreak havoc on anyone who comes near her..she's just one of those characters that makes me smile. I also like her devotion to “Ken-chan” and the odd makeshift family they have..
Matt/Mello: the first time I came across this pairing was in this series of fanart of Matt and Mello in Whammy's, all in watercolor at Aarin Fantasy. it was so sweet but there was something very fragile about Mello in it that I liked. the second time was in a fanfic called “Godless” by Lily-and-Shadow at fanfiction.net (it's unfinished). since not much is known about the characters, especially Matt, I like that their relationship and past can have so many possibilities...besides, Matt's so adorable
Fortune Cookies: I could eat these things all day. seriously. did you know that half the fortunes out there are written by a guy in his garage in California? I kid you not ^_^ the best ones are the chocolate/strawberry/citrus combination ones..& here are some fortunes that I've gotten:
“One joy will scatter a hundred sorrows.”
“Don't let the past and useless details choke your existence.”
“Love is the first feeling people feel, because love is nice.”
“Man is what he believes.”
“Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.”
Lucky Number that came up most often: 37
Ikkaku/Yumichika: when I saw Kaku (I call him “Kaku”, everyone else seems to call him “Ikka” which I don't think is cute at all...) and Yumi for the first time when they meet Ichigo and Ganju, I didn't think much of them..and Yumi didn't seem much of a “pretty-boy” that he was supposed to be (I still don't understand the orange things he wears). this is another pairing that I really got into through fanfiction. something else that got me into it was in the episode/chapter when Kaku uses his BanKai and Yumi explains how he's not supposed to help Kaku and if they are destined to die in a fight then it's okay by them, I always get the impression that Yumi's not totally convinced about that. I also love the notion that Yumi and Kaku have been friends for a very long time, and I like the similarities between them and Yachiru and Kenpachi. And something about the fact that Yumi doesn't tell Kaku about his shikai being a kidou type because he doesn't want to be disliked by him. This is really one of my favorite pairings ever because of all the history they seem to have together and how devoted Yumi seems to be to Kaku..
