Day 16 - Your guilty pleasure show

After some thought, I realized there is really only one answer to this question. Only the best vampire series EVER. No, not that one. No no, not that other one either. Nor that other other one. None of those can compare to the magnificence of Alexander Lucard! Yes, I speak of the tragically ridiculous yet hilariously addictive Dracula: The Series. It's about 95% camp and 5% Shakespeare. *g* And it actually has something of a complex characterization for Alexander Lucard.

Only 1 season, 21 1/2 hour episodes, that follow the adventures of Uncle Gustav Helsing and his two young nephews Max and Chris (brothers) and his young charge Sophie, as they have adventures tumbling in and out of Alexander Lucard's orderly, vampiric life as a European business tycoon and general evil mastermind, much to his fastidious displeasure.

Below is the first 10 minutes of the first episode, which is actually one of the weaker episodes, but introduces all the players, and a fine example of the, um, camp. At least watch it through the theme song intro, because it's the best!

And the following is closer toward the end of the series, and shows some of the 5% Shakespeare that is occasionally sprinkled throughout the series. The acting between Lucard and Helsing is actually very good, and shows the theatre roots of both actors. And the themes that are bandied about are deep and complex and far greater than a silly little series like this could really sink its teeth into (HEE). For context (if you actually choose to watch all 10 minutes, which I recommend!), Lucard turned the elder Helsing's son, Klaus, into a Vampire years ago, but unfortunately the transformation turned Klaus somewhat unstable and more than a little insane. And so, because of this, it is a particularly bitter rivalry between Lucard and Helsing, and Lucard actually feels some obligation and responsibility toward Klaus (sometimes. Lucard is nothing if he is not treacherous) as his mentor and his creator. The glowing green cross is some sort of weapon Klaus has fashioned to kill Lucard. Klaus is played by non other than Geraint Wyn Davis! In his first vampire role. :D

All the episodes are available on YouTube.

I'm normally not particularly interested in vampires, except for when I am, and for some reason Dracula: The Series remains the exception. I wrote two Yuletide stories for DTS: For the splendor of it all -- Lucard/Max (aged a few years) and Nocturne, Lucard/Sophie (also aged a few years).

To think I would have been the architect of my own demise... now that would have been depressing! -- Alexander Lucard.
