HELL YES BARACK OBAMA
PRESIDENT Barack Obama. It's amazing. I am so, so proud of my country - I really, honestly believe that this will change this nation for the better.
I'll be completely honest, though - I've been pessimistic about this election from the very beginning, and I really think that this negative mindset comes from being a Democrat who has always lived in an extremely conservative state. I've always known that my vote won't count on a national level (god damned electoral college) and that I will usually be in the minority. I've always been afraid to participate in casual political discussions with people who I don't know very well - and even friends who I know will disagree with me.
Not so long ago I was discussing politics with a friend of mine (a good friend, a moderate friend who I trusted enough to be civil) and the topic of Obama came up. It was a couple years ago, when people were just starting to talk about the presidential campaign - and I told her that I did not believe that this would happen. I did not believe that this country would elect a black president - I didn't really think he could even get nominated. Not now, anyway. Not this soon. I could see it coming in the future, but I thought maybe in eight, twelve years. (Of course, this was back when McCain was still playing at being a moderate, as well.) I am a little bit ashamed to have been so doubting, so jaded.
McCain is conceding now. He's giving a very nice speech. But I wish he would stick a fucking cork in the people who have the nerve to boo him when he says good things about Obama.
But I guess that, especially living in Oklahoma, I'll have to deal with that kind of crap. I'm incredibly excited about the next four (eight!) years, but I know that the Republicans will do NOTHING but BITCH. Bipartisanism becomes impossible when the other side outright refuses to cooperate with anything. For all they talk about wanting cooperation (both parties but especially those to the Right) it's so obvious that they only want it if they are the ones forcing the other side to cooperate.
I told you, I'm a political pessimist. I know I'm kind of jaded about it all. But I will just hope that I am as wrong about that preconception as I was about the others.
awesome,
