Last night I traded my soul's innermost for pickled fish.

1) Chuck was adorable last night. He is really growing me. He's Seth v 2.0 - but much more tolerable.

2) Okay, someone I trust implicitly tells me that Gossip Girl is the best thing since sliced bread, and while I am dubious, I understand that Spiers from Band of Brothers is on there in some capacity and I may at least have to view an episode. ( Read more... )

It's all about rich teenagers on the Upper East Side in New York, and hilariously over the top. The sleepover last week involved more prep than a royal wedding.

Slashiness: on the boy side, there's petulant Nate, whose dad wants him to go to a specific Ivy League college, probably because dear old dad has been draining trust funds for reasons undetermined. Desperately in love with Nate --> Chuck, the rake, who was described (accurately) as having gone to the "James Spader Academy for Evil Preppies."

On the girl side, there's Blair (think Summer Roberts if she were more heartless and entirely devoted to the social heirarchy) and maybe-sorta BFF Serena. Serena slept with Blair's boyfriend (Nate, who wants to break up with her but is told not to by dear old dad), disappeared to boarding school for a year, and has only now returned. They have fabulous issues and appear to care about each other far more than any boy.

I'm not sure which one was in Band of Brothers (I have a hard time telling them apart, probably because of the buzz cuts, helmets, and dirty faces), but suspect it was the guy playing once-rocker, now art gallery owner Rufus, who is father of teen outsider Dan, who is angling to become Serena's boyfriend.

I wouldn't suggest it's high art or anything, but I'm really enjoying the show - there's enough genuine emotion and connection mixed in with the ostentatious hijinx to keep it from being all laughable.

Between the fervent recommendations and this interview where basically the entire male casts seems to think it's bi or gay or wouldn't mind trying it out, I see I shall have to watch it.
