Ellen Mary Gerard ArchiveEllen Mary Gerard.
...Gerard must have been a remarkable woman. Born in Minnesota in 1883, she was a nurse who in 1918 decided to join the Near East Relief Administration and serve for three years in Lebanon and Syria. During her tenure she was responsible for over 1,000 Armenian orphans-I can’t imagine what horrors she must have seen. Some of the tales of human suffering are captured in these paper relics and some even have extensive captions written on the backs, giving voice to people who would’ve otherwise been silenced. The photos from this three-year period of her life are what you will predominantly see here. For those of you who are interested in learning more about Gerard, a short biography is found on the Memorial Card printed at her funeral, which was fortunately included in the collection-you can find that at the beginning of this collection.
