BSA Jamboree 2010 - Day 2 - Setup

Jul 24, 2010 22:04

I woke up this morning at 6:00AM (naturally!) and ate a good breakfast of sausage, eggs, cereal, and a banana. About 8:45AM, I realized I had left my lunch tickets on the bus the night before. It was very dark on the seat and I just missed them. Luckily, the bus I got on to take me back to the registration area was being driven by one of the guys who drove the buses the night before. The driver remembered the number of the bus I rode the previous night and was nice enough to drive me out to the bus depot to check it. Sure enough, my tickets were on bus #178. He saved me a bunch of hassle and time I would have spent at registration trying to get my meal tickets replaced.

I got to the my staff area about 9:30am and found only some unopened tables. I helped find some fans and coolers for our area and then slowly realized we had nothing to do. Our exhibit supplies were not delivered and I don't think the guy in charge of our area did much planning. We set up some tables, some fans, and filled our coolers. Lunch time came around and still that is all we had done. I did enjoy the conversation we had most of the day. We (the volunteer staff) are coming up with exhibits on the fly. By the end of the day tomorrow, we should have a rope board, a "Scouting in Action" section, a "Post your CSP" section, and a place for people to sign their names on the boards.

I think I lucked out on my staff assignment. There are enough of us assigned to my area that we will all have plenty of time off to enjoy the Jamboree. I think I will get to spend a good bit of time with the Yocona Area Council contingent. I'm also really looking forward to meeting the group of scouts from South Korea. I love the reactions of Koreans when an American starts speaking their language. They don't expect it at all.

Dinner was ham, candied yams, carrots and green beans, and salad. Like all my meals here so far, it was good.

It was 104 degrees here today but with the fans blowing on us in our exhibit tent, it wasn't too bad. At the hottest point in the day I was feeling okay. I bought an $8 neck cooling device from the trading post which is filled with some kind of water-absorbing gel (like the stuff in baby diapers). It is the best $8 I have spent in a long time!

Tomorrow I will attend a Church of Christ religious service and likely be recruited to do some song leading for other CoC services later in the week.
