Danny was driving a bit over the speed limit, but for a change he felt justified; today he was running late and that just would not do. Not today.

Today Steve was coming home from what had started out as a two week training run, but had turned into a two month ‘it's-classified-I-can't-talk-about-it-Danny' mission to God knows where. But he was on his way home - finally - and Danny had a plan. He had talked the whole thing over with Rachel, listed out pros and cons, gotten her to play devil's advocate, and decided the hell with it. He wanted to spend the rest of his life with this man, so that's what he was going to do.

He'd thought about getting a ring, but decided that if Steve wanted one he could get it later; for now it more about the declaration. Rachel had let him take Grace out of school for the day and she was almost as excited for this as Danny was.

Now, as they drove to Pearl-Hickam, Grace peppered him with questions: Did this mean they would be spending all of their weekends with Steve? Was Danny moving into Steve's house? Were Steve and Danny getting for-real married? And then…."Does this mean I can call Steve 'Step-Steve'?" she asked as they made their way onto the base, and wound around cold looking, cement-block buildings to the air field where Steve's helicopter would be landing.

Danny felt the emotion clog up his throat for a second and cleared it before he could talk. "Monkey, that's something you'd have to ask him. But I'm sure he won't mind. Remember, you have to let him come all the way away from the helicopter, you can't just ambush him."

Grace smiled indulgently at her father and Danny would swear that it was a smile straight off of Rachel's face. "I know, I will. Are you okay, Dad? You look like you're gonna puke."

Danny laughed out loud at that, and the tension he'd been feeling for the last two months vanished. This was going to turn out okay.

They got out of the car and walked to the edge of the air field, standing slightly away from the others who were also waiting for loved ones, just in time to watch the loud, green helo begin landing. Danny took Grace's hand in his and felt himself shaking a little. Okay so maybe he was a little nervous, but damn it he had a right to feel that way. It wasn't everyday you proposed to your best friend; your best friend who had also been your lover for almost a year. As the side door on the big machine slid open Grace smoothed her free hand down her new, navy blue, sun-dress. Danny had let her pick it out over the weekend, and she wanted it to look perfect so that Steve would know she loved him as much as Danny did. Danny saw her out of the corner of his eye and took a moment to smooth his tie and shirt-front down. Presentation was everything in a situation like this.

They both watched eagerly as the men disembarked from the chopper and stood a little straighter when they saw Steve hop down. They weren't the only ones here waiting for loved ones, but they were the best dressed, and Steve's eyes widened when he caught sight of them. He said a few words to the men around him, pointing out Danny and Grace and quickly made his way over to them.

As soon as Danny deemed Steve a safe distance away from the helo he let Grace's hand go and she took off. Watching them meet in the middle of the field made Danny choke up a bit.

Grace barreled into Steve sure in the knowledge that he would catch her as she leapt for him. He did, of course. And Danny felt the tears well up in his eyes when Steve spun her around several times.

Steve shifted Grace to his hip, carrying her like she weighed nothing, and made his way over to Danny. Grace rested her head on Steve's shoulder, looking every bit the adoring daughter.

"So I seem to have picked up a little souvenir. You think we should take her home and put her on a shelf to look at? You'll have to keep her dusted." Steve asked when he was close enough to Danny to not have to shout.

Danny couldn't answer. He couldn't do anything but look at his whole world standing in front of him. Danny's breath caught in his throat. Yes, Steve had only been gone for two months, but in that time Danny's whole world view had changed. He'd gone from the guy who never thought he'd get married again to entertaining the possibility of forever with Steve. He took a half step back and looked his fill. Steve was trimmer, more fit, from his constant activity and probable 18 hour days on board the air craft carrier, doing god-knows-what. But he looked good. He looked like the future, like everything Danny didn't know he had wanted, until it wasn't with him. "I wasn't expecting you to pick me up, Danny. Is everything okay?" Steve asked when Danny's silence got too long.

"Yeah, every thing's fine. I just -- we just…." Danny amended, looking at Grace to make sure she was still okay with this. She nodded once and Danny found himself choked up again.

"We wanna know if you'll marry us!" Grace said when she realized her father wouldn't be able to.

Steve looked questioningly at Danny and saw the color rising to his cheeks and his nod. He pulled Grace around to face him and said very solemnly, "I would be the happiest man alive to marry you both." Grace wrapped her arms around Steve's neck, and squealed loud enough for Danny to hear.

Danny took the opportunity to move in closer, now that he had his answer, and the butterflies in his stomach had calmed down. He hugged Steve and buried his face in Grace's hair; the emotions were getting to be too much for him.

The three made their way to Danny’s car in silence, and just as Danny was about to get in the driver’s side, Steve set Grace down and bumped Danny’s hip with his own and stole the keys out of his hand.

Danny stood, still, wanting to breathe in the moment, commit it to memory. Never forget that this was the day Steve had promised to be with him forever.

Steve leaned into him whispering “Hey, I love you, you know that?”

Danny looked up squinting into the sun, “Yeah, babe, I know.”

They separated slowly to see Grace already in the back seat grinning at them. Danny watched, from the passenger seat, as Steve put his sea bag in the trunk, then he was in the driver’s seat, and they were off. Out of the corner of his eye Danny saw Steve’s hand, palm up, fingers wiggling. Danny, feeling only slightly like a 14 year old girl, slid his palm against Steve’s and grinned when Steve’s fingers wrapped around his.

Danny heard the tip-tap-tip of quick, small fingers against a cell phones keyboard; and the unmistakable click-snap of a camera. This was followed by more typing. “Monkey, who ya talking to?” Danny asked as nonchalantly as possible. The answer made him blush again.

“Mommy and Kono; they wanted an update," Grace said all innocence and child-like glee.

Steve cracked up laughing.

Danny wasn’t pleased. “I’m glad you find that so humorous, Rambo. You do realize that all of Hawaii will know about us by tomorrow.”

Steve’s response wasn’t quite what Danny expected. His proud, “I know,” caught Danny off guard for a moment. His next comment had Danny back-stepping looking for an answer. “Where’s my ring, Danno? You know, if you like it then you should have put a ring on it.” Danny saw Steve wink into the rear-view, at Grace who was giggling and typing madly again. He disentangled their hands as they neared the administrative building where Steve would have to sign out.

Danny tugged him back as Steve tried to leave the car. “We’ll get a set as soon as we’re done with lunch, okay?”

“That sounds good, Danny. That sounds really good.”

Danny basked in Steve’s grin and swagger as he made his way into the building.
