“C’mon Danno, Step Steve and I are going to be late for school!”

Danny groggily opened his eyes to find his daughter Grace’s face mere inches from his own. Hands on hips, school uniform on, pigtails already expertly braided, she stared him down until he relented out of bed, kissing her forehead as she grabbed his hand and tugged him towards the stairs.

“I wanted to let you sleep in,” Steve said, flashing a grin as Danny padded into the kitchen, Grace perched happily on his back. Danny leaned over and Grace slid off his back and onto a chair. A minute later, Steve slid a fresh stack of chocolate chip pancakes on the table.

“Thanks, Step Steve!” Grace said, pulling three pancakes onto her plate and grabbing the syrup.

“Thanks, babe,” Danny said, tilting his head up to meet Steve’s kiss, before tearing off a piece of pancake. “I’m gonna go grab a quick shower, get changed.”

“You’ve got to look good for Parents’ Day,” Steve grinned, kissing Danny again. “Of course, you always look good.”

“Right back atcha, babe,” Danny grinned back, taking in Steve’s well-fitting t-shirt, school logo emblazoned across the front.

“Daadds,” Grace said, rolling her eyes good-naturedly.

“Monnnkeey,” Danny teased back, lightly tugging on one of her perfect pigtails before hurrying upstairs.

Danny stood in a large group of parents, name tag stuck to his button-down shirt, listening to the principal extol the school’s many wonderful offerings and successes. “And here we have our award-winning gym program, developed and led by an actual ex-Navy SEAL,” the principal trilled, gesturing to the large gymnasium they had moved in front of.

Danny grinned, unable to help his face breaking out into a giant smile as they moved into the gym. There was Steve, whistle hanging around his neck, smile lighting up his face as he supervised the group of students running the elaborate obstacle course that covered the whole gym. Squeals of laughter and excitement met the parents’ ears as the kids crawled through cloth tunnels and over piles of mats. Grace took a brief second to wave at Danny before grabbing a rope hanging from the ceiling, and swinging over to another pile of mats.

The principal led the parents’ group over to Steve, carefully dodging the happy kids. “This is Mr. McGarrett-Williams, our gym teacher,” the principal said, and Danny knew he was grinning proudly as the principal continued to extol Steve’s virtues. Then he realized the groups’ eyes were suddenly on his name tag, taking in the Danny McGarrett-Williams scrawled in Sharpie.

Danny and Steve had first met at the first Parents’ Day after Steve had joined the faculty. Steve was supposed to be there just for a few months, on temporary leave from active duty after a brutal mission overseas. Danny and Steve danced around each other for half of those months before Grace called her own Parent-Teacher conference, sat them down, and let them know that not only did she really like Mr. McGarrett, but that she was really good at gym anyway so it’s not like they had to worry about Steve playing favorites with her and giving her even better grades than she was already earning.

Danny took Steve to dinner that night.

“We in fact have Mr. McGarrett-Williams here, next to us here,” the principal stuttered slightly, pointing at Danny and drawing the attention of the crowd fully to him, “to thank for keeping Mr. McGarrett-Williams there…um, over by the rope course there…here on our fair islands of Hawaii.”

Three weeks before Steve was due to ship back to train a new group of recruits, Grace started having nightmares, losing her appetite, crying in the middle of the day for what seemed to be no reason they could discern. Steve by this point was sleeping at the house every night, and one early morning, Danny found Steve and Grace on the couch together, Grace curled up on Steve’s lap, wrapped in his arms.

“I don’t want you to leave, Steve,” she was sobbing, almost incoherently, and Danny met Steve’s tear-filled eyes and mouthed “Me neither, babe,” before joining the two on the couch and gathering them up into his arms.

Once Grace had calmed down enough, Steve rose from the couch, walked to the phone, and called in one very large favor. He very calmly and surely got his assignment moved to Hawaii, drilling new ROTC recruits once a month, then moved to the kitchen and started making breakfast like always.

It took three seconds for him to be enthusiastically tackled by Grace and Danny, which led to an all-out flour war and smiley chocolate chip pancakes to celebrate.

The parents grinned and clapped as their eyes fell back on the students, who had suddenly moved into a formation and were executing self-defense moves, kicks and punches and spins carefully pulled so as not to actually touch any of their fellow students.

“Our gym teacher is also responsible for lowering bullying in the school by over fifty percent,” the principal added. “Through teaching the children self-defense, he’s not only raised their self-esteem, but also taught them how to protect themselves outside of the school should the unspeakable occur.”

Danny clapped loudest of all.

“Did you like Parents’ Day, Danno?” Grace asked, holding onto both Steve and Danny’s hands, swinging herself back and forth as they lifted her off the ground.

“I loved it, Monkey,” Danny grinned back, swinging her extra high. “I got to see my two favorite people in the whole world, and hear the principal talk about how fantastic they are.”

“Sap,” Steve teased, earning a gentle nudge and a teasing glare from Danny.

“And Principal Turner even said we’re the reason you’re here!” Grace crowed, as she tugged them towards the shaved ice stand. “Everyone looked really impressed.”

“Well, that’s because you two are the reason I’m here,” Steve said, soft tone betraying the truth behind his words as his eyes met Danny’s.

“And we’re proud of it, babe,” Danny answered, leaning over Grace’s head to kiss Steve.
