Suddenly I had the realization that I could buy an Abra from the Rocket
Game Corner in Celadon. Naturally I immediately did so, and placed the level 9 Abra (I called him SPOONY!?!?) in my party, depositing Ripfang to make room. After that I set to training Spoony. As is to be expected of low-level unevolved pokemon, he grew quickly, and evolved in no time. One Spoony and Sanji catch up to the rest of the party, I'm sure things will go a lot more smoothly than they have been recently.
Hour 31 party status
Leo, Blastoise, level 43
Hermes, Pidgeotto, level 39
Noxious, Gloom, level 40
Angua, Growlithe, level 39
Sanji, Hitmonlee, level 25
SPOONY!?!?, Kadabra, level 20, male, 'lax nature', ability: Inner Focus
After getting Spoony to level 25 I started training he and Sanji on the bike route. I made a system where Spoony would basically one-shot everything, except Raticates, which I let Sanji handle. Seriously, it was grinding, not much to talk about.

Holy shit I just realized I could just pick up the VS Seeker at the Vermillion Pokemon Center. This'll make grinding a shitton easier. Now if you'll excuse me...

Sanji, Hitmonlee, level 37
SPOONY!?!?, Kadabra, level 40
After training the whole team to at least level 40, I went after Koga and then Sabrina. Spoony and Leo rampaged through each gym by themselves - Spoony took out all of Koga's pokemon in one hit and Leo was at about 2/3 health at the end of the Sabrina battle. I certainly have a lot of rhythm going, ever since I started using the VS Seeker.
Hour 35 party status

Hermes, Pidgeotto, level 40
Noxious, Gloom, level 41
Angua, Growlithe, level 40
Sanji, Hitmonlee, level 40
SPOONY!?!?, Kadabra, level 42
I let Noxious handle most of the pokemon on the water path. She hit level 44 and learned Petal Dance, her last naturally learned move, so I went and got a Leaf Stone from the Celadon mart and had her evolve into Vileplume. On the way I caught a Tentacool and named it J-E-L-L-O, and at the Seafoam Islands a Psyduck which I named Perry. Gee, I sure am glad I'm catching ALL THESE WATER POKEMON THAT I CAN'T USE IN BATTLES.
Hour 36 party status
Leo, Blastoise, level 49
Hermes, Pidgeotto, level 40
Noxious, Vileplume, level 45
Angua, Growlithe, level 42
Sanji, Hitmonlee, level 40
SPOONY!?!?, Kadabra, level 42
I reached Cinnibar Island and dropped off the amber fossil so I could get an Aerodactyl back if I ever needed it. I also suddenly came to the realization that I could reach the Power Plant and get an Electric pokemon I would be happy with now. So I went and caught an Electabuzz, which I named Virgil. Caught him at level 32, so he doesn't have too much catching up to do, he can learn Strength and thus replace Sanji. Good stuff.
Hour 37 party status
Leo, Blastoise, level 49
Hermes, Pidgeotto, level 40
Noxious, Vileplume, level 45
Angua, Growlithe, level 42

SPOONY!?!?, Kadabra, level 42
Virgil, Electabuzz, level 40
I trained Virgil and Angua up to level 45 before I headed into the mansion, figuring Leo and Spoony would get training done in there. The first non-dupliate wild pokemon I encountered was a Koffing which Self-Destructed on the first turn. Well crap.
Hour 39 party status
Leo, Blastoise, level 49
Hermes, Pidgeotto, level 45
Noxious, Vileplume, level 45
Angua, Growlithe, level 45
SPOONY!?!?, Kadabra, level 42
Virgil, Electabuzz, level 45
The Mansion ended up being more of a breeze than I remembered past runs of it being. We were out of there and had time to take on Blaine's gym within the hour. I laughed loudly as Leo one-shotted every single pokemon in the entire gym. RIDDLES!? I DON'T NEED TO SOLVE NO STINKING RIDDLES, I HAVE A WATER STARTER MOTHER-FUCKER! And uh. Then Bill took me to the Sevii Islands.
Hour 40 party status
Leo, Blastoise, level 52
Hermes, Pidgeotto, level 45
Noxious, Vileplume, level 45
Angua, Growlithe, level 45
SPOONY!?!?, Kadabra, level 45
Virgil, Electabuzz, level 45
So I went through all the stuff that happens when you first reach the Sevii Islands. Beat up the Bikers on Three Island with Spoony, rescued Lostelle (what kind of name is Lostelle anyway? just asking the git to wander off with that), went back to the mainland. And then I figured I was already set to fight Giovanni so I headed up to Viridian. Spoony and Leo split the trainers and then Leo took on Giovanni by herself. Wonder why he doesn't have that Kangaskhan anymore...Whatever, makes things easier for me. And then I just went back to One Island and Two Island so I could grab HM06 and have Leo learn Hydro Cannon.
Hour 41 party status
Leo, Blastoise, level 55
Hermes, Pidgeotto, level 45
Noxious, Vileplume, level 46
Angua, Growlithe, level 46
SPOONY!?!?, Kadabra, level 48
Virgil, Electabuzz, level 46
I decided a little recklessly to take on Zandel now rather than later, and headed onto the road between Victory Road and Viridian City. A few of my pokemon had some close calls, but I won with no casualties. Still, I realized I should do some more training before heading to the Elite Four. In this hour I mainly focused on Angua, to get her to learn her last natural move before evolving her. Once she learned Flamethrower at level 49, I used a Fire Stone and she evolved to Arcanine.
