Pokemon Fire Red Nuzlocke run - part 3

Apr 09, 2010 17:11

Headed west, defeating trainers on the way to the tunnel to Celadon. In the middle of this I thought of renaming Dogname to Lassie, and since the Name Rater was in Lavender I quickly made the change. I thought it fitting since, besides being probably the most famous female dog name, it sounded vaguely Scottish, which fits with a Growlithe's orange fur. Once I got to route 7 on the other side I decided to train Lassie, since there were actually some Grass-types in the area. Just as soon as I get away from this level 22 Pidgey...can't escape, well fine just try again...god damn thing's too fast! Oh shit a critical hi- LASSIE NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Ripfang tore the bastard bird's throat out but vengeance can't erase the pain. Oh Lassie, we hardly knew ye...but you shan't be forgotten!...Not even when I catch another Growlithe from the exact same area you died.

Hour 19 party status
Leo, Wartortle, level 35
Ripfang, Raticate, level 25
Hermes, Pidgeotto, level 26
Noxious, Gloom, level 26
DK, Mankey, level 26
Deceased: Lassie (Growlithe)

I caught another female Growlithe, this one level 20, and named her Angua. TRAINING MONTAAAAAAAAAAGE.

Hour 20 party status
Leo, Wartortle, level 35
Ripfang, Raticate, level 25
Hermes, Pidgeotto, level 26
Noxious, Gloom, level 26
DK, Mankey, level 27
Angua, Growlithe, level 24, female, 'bold nature', ability: Flash Fire

Made my way through Rocket's base. Both DK and Leo evolved and I had to leave only a couple times when a member of the team was poisoned. When I stopped for the hour I was almost all the way through, just had Giovanni left to battle.

Hour 21 party status
Leo, Blastoise, level 36
Ripfang, Raticate, level 27
Hermes, Pidgeotto, level 26
Noxious, Gloom, level 27
DK, Primeape, level 28
Angua, Growlithe, level 27

I beat Giovanni with Leo alone. When two of your three pokemon are rock/ground, Blastoise tends to eat you. After getting the Silph Scope I picked up Eevee and the old woman's tea from the mansion. I named Eevee Potential since I don't know what I'll do with him yet. Angua and Hermes got some great experience in Erika's gym, and Hermes ended up being the only pokemon to battle against Erika herself. I headed back east, giving the tea to the guards and opening up Saffron. Stopped for the hourly update in Pokemon Tower.

Hour 22 party status
Leo, Blastoise, level 36
Ripfang, Raticate, level 27
Hermes, Pidgeotto, level 30
Noxious, Gloom, level 27
DK, Primeape, level 28
Angua, Growlithe, level 29

Noxious managed to combine Stun Spore and Absorb to weaken a weak Ghastly enough so I could catch it rather than defeat it. I named the female Ghastly Phantasm and continued through the tower. Angua handled most of the dirty work, but I let Leo handle the last floor with the Marowak on it. I switched up what Pokemon took on the Rockets, an- DK NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! AUGH! YOU USED SELFDESTRUCT ON THE FIRST FUCKING TURN! HOW DARE YOU! OH ARRRRRRRRRRGH!!!

-Sniff- Good bye, little tough guy. I'll...I'll never forget how awesome your Karate Chops were. Well, got to move on. I considered taking Potential and evolving him into Jolteon, up until I saw he wouldn't learn any damaging Electric moves until Thunder in the 50s, and Voltorb's learnset in terms of actually gaining Electric attacks is bad. I think I'll leave the sixth spot on the team open, for now. And it'll help pay respects to the life of my first important lost Pokemon.

Hour 23 party status
Leo, Blastoise, level 37
Ripfang, Raticate, level 27
Hermes, Pidgeotto, level 30
Noxious, Gloom, level 27
Angua, Growlithe, level 31
Deceased: Lassie (Growlithe), DK (Primeape)

I headed down route 12, having Noxious battle the trainers along the way. I realized that since I had no rod or Surf, Snorlax would be my first Pokemon of the route and I'd have to catch him. After a bit of frustration I managed to wear the Snorlax down and catch it. I named the thing Hybernate and stored him in my PC. After that I backtracked to Lavender and went all the way over to route 16. Here I grabbed Fly and also caught a Doduo, which I named Foureyes. This will be inaccurate if it ever evolves into Dodrio but I don't think that'll happen. I also beat the other Snorlax here.

Hour 24 party status
Leo, Blastoise, level 37
Ripfang, Raticate, level 27
Hermes, Pidgeotto, level 32
Noxious, Gloom, level 30
Angua, Growlithe, level 31

I went down route 12 and started going across route 13. On route 13 I caught a female Venonat and named her Tick. But whatever, I was more focused on training my team.

Hour 25 party status
Leo, Blastoise, level 37
Ripfang, Raticate, level 30
Hermes, Pidgeotto, level 33
Noxious, Gloom, level 30
Angua, Growlithe, level 33

Not much to report here. I moved through routes 14 and 15, beating up trainers along the way. First non-copy I encountered on route 15 was a Ditto, and I killed it with a crit by mistake. Ah well. The Bikers on route 15 were really annoying, they kept getting the poison side-effect of Sludge. One of them had three Koffings a Weezing and a Grimer, and ended up poisoning three members of my team. Ugh. Fortunately now that Hermes knows Fly healing poison after a battle is a lot easier.

Hour 26 party status
Leo, Blastoise, level 37
Ripfang, Raticate, level 35
Hermes, Pidgeotto, level 35
Noxious, Gloom, level 31
Angua, Growlithe, level 34

For hour 27 I just went around finding as many trainers as I could. After I cleared out one path to Fuchsia, I went down the other. With Noxious getting a lion's share of the fighting done, all five members of my team were now at least level 35.

Hour 27 party status
Leo, Blastoise, level 37
Ripfang, Raticate, level 35
Hermes, Pidgeotto, level 35
Noxious, Gloom, level 36
Angua, Growlithe, level 35

I was intent on advancing through the game while leveling up my party in hour 28. After clearing all trainers on both paths to Fuchsia, I made the Safari Zone my first stop. I treated the Zone as being four separate areas for the catching rules - basically, four different routes. Didn't make much of a difference though. First area I missed catching Nidorina and third area I missed catching Rhyhorn. The only pokemon I caught was an Exeggcute which I named Yolkian. I went to the Silph. Co. building, but I've got some concerns about meeting Zandel here. Not sure what I'll do to level up the party to a point I can safely defeat him.

Hour 28 party status
Leo, Blastoise, level 40
Ripfang, Raticate, level 37
Hermes, Pidgeotto, level 37
Noxious, Gloom, level 36
Angua, Growlithe, level 37

I started feeling better about the strength of my team as I discovered just how much experience there was to be had beating up Rockets. I focused on trying to get everyone to level 40, and once I reach that point I think I'll work on getting Leo as high as possible before we encounter Zandel. Nothing specific to note here, just that the Silph building is BIG.

Hour 29 party status
Leo, Blastoise, level 40
Ripfang, Raticate, level 38
Hermes, Pidgeotto, level 39
Noxious, Gloom, level 39
Angua, Growlithe, level 39

Zandel was tough but Giovanni was a damn pain. Nidoqueen and Kangaskhan are freaking hard to kill. If there's anything Nuzlocke is making difficult it's the lack of versatility to my team - I found myself really wishing for a good Psychic or Electric type between the two duels (Psychic for the Poisons and Electric just for Zandel's damn Gyarados). Somehow we made it through, though. Leo was enough to sweep the fighting gym in Saffron which we visited immediately afterward, and I took Hitmonlee at the end. Hitmonlee's level 25 and male, and I named him Sanji. Decided to keep Sanji on the team for now and train him up. After all, I had to replace DK somehow. Once I get a good electric type I think Raticate's getting the axe. Also, got a Lapras from the Silph president. Named her Loch and stuck her in the PC.

Hour 30 party status
Leo, Blastoise, level 43
Ripfang, Raticate, level 39
Hermes, Pidgeotto, level 39
Noxious, Gloom, level 40
Angua, Growlithe, level 39
Sanji, Hitmonlee, level 25, male, 'gentle nature', ability: Limber
In PC: Warbeak (lv13 Spearow), Chester (lv10 Meowth), Buzz (lv21 Beedrill), Moleman (lv18 Diglett), Enailitper (lv15 Ekans), Thundrball (lv16 Voltorb), Buffy (lv24 Golbat), Potential (lv25 Eevee), Hybernate (lv30 Snorlax), Foureyes (lv20 Doduo), Tick (lv24 Venonat), Yolkian (lv 23 Exeggcute), Loch (lv25 Lapras)
Deceased: Lassie (Growlithe), DK (Primeape)

Next time: MORE TRAINING and then, to the Fuchsia and Saffron gyms!
