Once, on a family trip to Aspen, Colorado, I got horrible, unrelenting and more or less incapacitating intestinal cramps. (I was about ten years old.) My father (a pediatrician) gave me some godawful licorice-flavored medicine that bore the trade name Paregoric. To this day I can't bear even the smell of black licorice (or anise).
