The door opened and she came in.
I see her everyday... I've been friends with her since forever... but my heart never stops pounding whenever she's around.
"Yo! Ohayou!" she said to the whole class enthusiastically, like she always does.
She moved towards me and I felt like the world stopped. But then she passed by me.
She proceeded towards her chair in front of me.
"You're so noisy so early in the morning." I grumped purposefully.
She glanced at me and glared, but I knew she was joking.
"Don't ruin the beautiful day, you." she said in a serious tone but the effect was ruined when she giggled.
I couldn't help but laugh, too.
That was when Umika arrived and took her seat beside Saaya.
I looked at my watch and realized it was already time and as if on cue, the bell rang.
Our sensei walked in within minutes. We greeted him and he started the lecture.
I was listening to our sensei but then I noticed Umika giving a piece of paper to Saaya.
I grew curious and so I straightened up and peeked.
'What happened yesterday?' was written in Umika's scribble. Saaya smiled and started writing, too.
'Nothing much... we just hung out...' The note was returned to Umika.
Umika looked at it for a second then started scribbling again. 'Just hung out?! No way I'm buying that!'
Saaya giggled but then she saw me looking at their note. She pouted at me then hid their note from my view.
I stuck my tongue at her.
She scrunched up her nose at me. Umika laughed.
We must have looked silly.
Saaya looked at her and smiled and then she turned her back at me and started talking to Umika in whispers.
I knew who they were talking about of course: Sakamoto Shougo.
Saaya and I are close. Best friends, even. She used to tell me everything but then she started liking him. She still told me things, but it was hard for me. And then I started insulting him whenever she mentions him so she stopped telling me about him. Well, she still does but not so much. She would occasionally ask me things about what boys like and stuffs.
They stopped talking when our sensei called the attention of the class. And then Saaya looked out the window, looking dreamy.
I turned away. I didn't want to see that, knowing she was thinking about him.
---
After class, I saw her hanging by the benches in front of our school alone. I was about to approach her- it has been so long since we last walked home together, but then I saw Shougo walking towards her.
I turned around, trying to go before she sees me. Seems someone is already walking home with her.
Too late, she called my name. I pretended not to hear.
I don't want to see them together.
I do not hate Shougo. But I'm worried about Saaya. Shougo is a nice guy. He's nice to everyone, to every girl. But it seems Saaya thinks he's in love with her. I don't know if he is, but he might not be.
I wish he is.
I don't want her to hurt, even if it hurts me.
---
I woke up from my nap when someone poked me.
It was Saaya.
"What are you doing here?" I asked.
It's been a while since she went here at my house even though our houses are right next to each other.
"Why were you in such a hurry earlier? I called you but you ignored me." she said and I could hear a little mope from her voice.
"I didn't hear you." I just said. "What are you doing here?" I asked again.
"I needed advice." she said. I knew at once this will be about Shougo. She smiled at me and took out a magazine.
I looked at it.
She opened it to a page and showed me the picture. It was a cake.
"Do boys like chocolate cake? I'm planning to make one for, um, my cousin."
Cousin whose name is Sakamoto Shougo, you mean.
I shrugged. "It's okay. I'm not fond of sweets but I do eat chocolate cake. I'm not sure if Shougo likes them, though." I said and she blushed.
"It's not for Shougo-kun!"
'Shougo-kun' huh.
"Honestly Saaya, you're not a good liar." I said; indifference in my tone. "Why do you like him, anyway?" I couldn't help asking.
"Well, he's perfect." She said. "He's everything any girl would want!"
"But does he want you?" I asked.
"I think so..." she said looking down, pink in the face.”He's nice to me, he walked me home yesterday, he hung out with me the other day, and he always mails me..." she said.
"But he's nice that way. He'd probably done all of that to Mirai or Suzuka, too." I pointed out. It was true. Among all of the boys, Shougo and Yuto are the closest to the girls. They're just friendly that way.
"I know that!" she said, "But I just have a feeling there's something... I mean, Umika-chan said Chii was like that to her before they started going out."
"Chii is a different person." I said.
"I know! Umika did say that. But I don't know, I really think he likes me back." she insisted. I dropped the subject. There was no getting to her.
"Try the Coffee flavored one." I decided to say, pointing at the magazine. "Not too sweet."
---
I was about to go, but then I saw the Home Ec. Lab still open.
I went to close it but someone was inside.
The girls: Mirai, Suzuka, Umika and Saaya. They were laughing pointing at Saaya.
She had icing on her face. She wiped it off with her hand, laughing too. So they're baking cakes.
I felt a twinge, but I had to smile at what I smelled.
At least she still follows my advice.
The coffee cake smelled delicious.
---
I was once again woken from my nap the next day.
Of course it was Saaya.
She was holding two set of clothes.
"What are you doing here?" I asked, grumpy. I was having a good nap.
"I needed advice. What's better?" she asked. She raise one of the sets, "This," It was an elegant blue dress with frills, "with this." She raised up a black furry boots "Or," she said as she put the set down. "This," she raised up a simple white hoodie and black short shorts, "with this." She raised up a black converse shoes with yellow lace.
I looked at her. "What is this?"
"It's for our Christmas party. Just choose, please." She pleaded. I sighed.
"The second one." I said. She beamed at me.
"Thanks Jingi!" she said and she was gone.
---
It was our Christmas party. Our Christmas break hasn't started, but since everyone would be busy during the holidays, we'd decided to have it early.
This year, it was Yuto's house. Last year it was Mirai's.
Everyone from class was there. And they've even invited Mariya and the rest of Hey! Say! JUMP.
Everyone was having fun.
Except for me.
I didn't know where Saaya was.
I know I seem obsessed with her, but I just have a feeling I need to see her. But she was nowhere in sight.
I approached Suzuka who was talking to Yuto's little brother.
"Suzuka, have you seen Saaya?" I asked.
She thought for a while, "I'm not sure, Jingi. Umika!" she called and Umika went near us.
"Jingi's looking for Saaya-chan." she said.
Umika grinned. "She's with Shougo-kun." She moved closer to me and whispered, "She's gonna confess, so she might be away for a while."
I started panicking inside. It isn't just because I feel like she's going farther away from me. Something was just wrong.
"Where did they go?" I asked Umika.
Umika looked at me, seeming surprised. Maybe she could see my panic, maybe because of the urgency in my voice, I didn't know
"I-I think they're in the backyard." she said.
I rushed down Yuto's stairs, going straight to the backdoor.
I hesitated when I got to the door.
Is this the right thing to do? I feel something is wrong but is it just me being selfish?
I just stopped thinking and silently opened the door.
I saw them at once.
They were in the gazebo.
I silently approached them. I hid behind the tree near the gazebo.
"You want to talk?" I heard Shougo asked.
"Uh, yes..." Saaya's voice came softly.
There was a pause.
"Um... I wanted to give you this..." she said. I peeked and saw her pass him a box. It must be the cake.
Shougo smiled. "Wow, thanks Saaya."
Saaya smiled back. "I... Shougo-kun, I like you."
I can't really describe how I felt. I was hurt but I wasn't... I don't know... It seems like I wasn't there, like someone else were inside my body...
Shougo looked surprised. "Ah, Saaya... I..."
Saaya looked at him.
He continued. "I like you, Saaya. But not like that, I'm so sorry."
I saw Saaya's smile cracked but she pulled it back at once.
"Oh...” she said trying to sound nonchalant.
"I-I see. Uhmm.. Shougo.. I'll go now..." she said.
Shougo didn't say anything. He must have known nothing he says would help.
Saaya walked out the gazebo hastily and she went by my tree.
She stopped when she saw me. And suddenly tears fell from her eyes.
She ran back inside the house.
I followed her.
I found her sitting in the kitchen. She was crying.
I approached her. She didn't notice me until I was immediately in front of her.
She looked up at me. I offered her my handkerchief.
She stared at it, and then she took it. And she continued to cry silently. I stayed with her.
After a while, she calmed down.
She stood up. "Thanks, Jingi." she said and she smiled at me.
I didn't say anything. I didn't know what I should say.
"I think I'll be going home now. Please just tell Umika-chan and the others." she said, trying not break down again, it seems.
She started walking.
I stared at her back.
Deciding for a second, I caught up with her and took her hand in mine.
She looked surprised.
"Let's go home." I said.
She squished my hand. I smiled.
We took our coats from the rack and exited the house. I didn't let go of her hand.
We walked slowly. My mind was racing but I felt like the time slowed down.
"I'm tired of looking at your back." I said but I didn't think of it. "I missed walking side by side."
I don't know if it's just me but I think she scooted closer to me as we walk.
---
The door opened and she came in.
I see her everyday... I've been friends with her since forever... but my heart never stops pounding whenever she's around.
"Yo! Ohayou!" she said to the whole class enthusiastically, like she always does.
She moved towards me and I felt like the world stopped.
I thought she'd just pass by me but she stopped in front of me.
She smiled and then took out something.
It was my handkerchief.
She took out another one.
"I haven't given you my Christmas present."
It was a small box. It was a piece of cake.
But it wasn't coffee, it was chocolate.
I smiled.
She smiled back.
