Recently, the channel I periodically watch instituted described video. I guess the DvR must have cut off the warning the first time it kicked in on a show i was watching. It was the Listener and as a result, I thought the woman narrating must be one of the female characters, possibly dead at the end of the show doing a "This is how I died" narration. It took most of the opening scene to figure it out. It's been approximately a month. I mostly like it. I'm not the intended audience, but a lot of time I'm doing other things while "watching" TV. I glance up at intervals, but unless it's a show I specifically just watch, I more listen than watch, if that makes sense. (I love close captioning for the hearing impaired BTW, because sometimes I have trouble parsing speech in certain sound environments, but alas my television doesn't have the option). Having the narration there for shows like the Listener helps. It's a mixed blessing for stand up comedy though. I really like that it tells me what facial expressions and gestures I'm missing while washing the dishes or whatever, but it's distracting to have her constantly fill laugh gaps with the same description "The audience sits in rows facing X" over and over. Wouldn't once be enough? From the laughing and clapping and Aw sounds, one knows they are there. It's not like an action scene where having someone describe what's going on adds to the effect or descriptions of the comics' physical its which enhance the funny. It's a small nitpick and I'm definitely happy that Canadian TV is doing what they can to accommodate blind viewers, regardless of the benefit to me. I love Canadian TV just generally. I just wish the descriptions focused on things that enhance meaning.
* RP, Questing edition:
I am honestly too tired to do this in any detail. Short form, We did the back time spirit journey at the world tree echo with Tiger, wherein he met a very clever monke who was to be his guide, fought a dragon, turned a fez into a caldron, and brewed drugged chai to drug the biggest tiger of them all. He also learned a little about metaphor, trees, and the stretching of things.
Then the party entered the maze in which they had many adventures and learned many things. The challenges were various and individually tailored, but common themes were choice, sacrifice, water/mirrors, silver/gold/iron, and the seasons. There were tests of cleverness, prowess, sacrifice, cooperation, and self awareness. It was long and messy. During it, Tiger rescued a Tiger, and Skull rescued the Lady, who was also a tigress. Also notable: Kenna made a sacrifice, Blake realized he needed to better integrate his nature, Bear learned to say no to Kenna, and Skull sacrificed her eye to become the Holly King's champion.
This is where I should have stopped, but barreled on anyway. They entered the Winter gate, crossed a courtyard to enter the tower of the Winter Court, climbed to the very top where they found the king sorrowing over the absence of his love. They accidentally poisoned him, and in trying to heal him, turned him into a tree, which they then planted on Tiger's advice. They entered the Summer gate to try to get the King to help, meeting his boyfriend in the process, but when they took the Summer King to the Winter garden, he became confused and began to wither. They returned him too his Court, despite Kenna insisting they ought to poison him too. Instead on Tiger's suggestion, they went in the Autumn gate, where they found the Court preparing for war. The talked the pretty boyfriend into coming with them on important quest to rescue someone. He used the magic chalice (from the maze) and liquid to turn the King mortal, they embraced, and the King became spring. They then let the mages burn the king alive to free the people trapped in the Labyrinth. Luckily, he sprouted again. The Lady's enchantment was lifted and she could be Khan again.
They went back to the Festival, though thethree tigers avoided it to go hunting, and the bear hid in the loft where they were staying. The other participated in contests and won chairs.
Next week: Blake's Initiation and Cordoba.
* Blake's player is taking the girls, who we quietly crated up in the bustle of people getting ready to leave. When I got back from dropping off Greenwick and Djinni, Hector met me at the door to alert me to the fact that cats were missing! He insisted on leading me around to show me all the paces cats weren't, poor guy. I've calmed him down enough for me to type this bit and the rp report up. I'm posting this, eating/taking meds, and then crashing.
