I realized I was not at all bored by being alone in the woods doing nothing all day long.

More on this adventure after I sleep, but I said I'd post a happy thought each day, and this is the happiest of several happy parts of the day.

I can't blog right now because I'm all writered-out.  In the past two days I've been on a writing jag and now have two brazen documents that are ten pages each and contain the soul of my project.

I went to a full day seminar today on learning to hunt deer.   This has been a long process and I've had to surmount many obstacles, but it's worth doing.

( Why is it worth doing? To eat locally, preserve skills and our heritage, and get the vermin out of the road. )

That last post made me feel anxious. I'm going to center myself a bit with this next one. I was just reflecting that I was very much myself today.

We went camping this week-end at Erving State Forest, a place we'd never been to.  Well, I didn't think we'd ever been to it, but it turns out that C. went to a graduation party at a lake house there and brought Small Boy with her the week-end we were in Maine being hit by a deer.  Well, that's good.  My goal was for the kids to get to know the ( Read more... )

The doe permits are handed out by zones in Massachusetts.  My Zone had 450 permits and 1866 people applied for them (in a lottery.)

Nantucket had 2700 doe permits available.  37 people applied.

Nantucket is over-run with Lyme disease, but nearly the entire island is privately owned and posted for No Hunting.

Two months ago a deer ran into my car.  It caused $6000 worth of damage (and still going up, because we can't get the car to pass inspection.)  It caused me to stop weight-lifting and start going to the chiropractor's.  It caused me to consider the utter dearth of predators for deer in Massachusetts ( Read more... )

Every-time I say, "Some one oughta...." I end up looking in the mirror and seeing some one.  Some one ought to kill some of those deer that are causing a hazard to driving.   I had always imagined that it was my Eldest Son and maybe my husband.  It never really rose to the surface in my head that it ought to be ME.  But Bambi made it personal when ( Read more... )

We nearly orphaned our three children last night.

This story begins on Saturday morning when it was time to leave for Maine.  We had a six hour drive up to a banquet in my mother-in-law's honor at UMaine Orono, an overnight stay, and then a six hour drive back home.  We evaluated the risks and determined that Small Boy was more endangered by driving ( Read more... )
