Yeah, I know it's been a while since I last posted... and this post isn't anything but venting about work. Hopefully, I'll have something more worthwhile next time. =)
I get an IM from one of our directory services guys:
Him: Ducky, do you have a minute?
Ducky: I will when I get back from lunch =)
At which point, I lock my terminal and... go to lunch. That didn't stop him, oh no. He calls me as I'm driving (yay, speakerphone!) asking about some process that's chewing up CPU and memory: svc.configd. How is this my problem? Well, he's never seen it before, so it must be part of the config management system I support. Obviously. Never mind the machine and its OS is officially supported by a whole group of people - we'll not consult them, even though they're the OS experts.
If you pop that one string, "svc.configd", into google, the first hit says, "OpenSolaris Forums: svc.configd size/load" and what to do about it (just kill it, the system will restart it). Within the first 4 hits, 3 are references to CPU and memory usage issues of this thing, the remaining hit is the manual page identifying it as a Solaris 10 thingy. So, clearly this is not something I wrote, but definitely part of Solaris, the cpu usage is a known issue, it's easy to fix. But lets call a guy at lunch who's not even involved.
*sigh* This was definitely a case where laziness was not a virtue. =/
Update: Oooh! The junior guy actually did go through the proper channels. Kudos to him! Too bad it was 10 minutes after the senior guy of the group called me at Lunch. Well, basically got told what I'd already told them. ^_^
stupidity,
work
