January was especially kind to me in the Irish pub song department. For almost the entire month I got to see a Tony Cummins show Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. First Tom Giblin's then weekends at the Harp in Ocean Beach.

Last Saturday I was "treated" to Harold's Renegade Band as Tony had a private performance or some such. Harold was more caustic than I remember, thus reminding me why I don't frequent his shows very much.

Tony was sick this Thursday so at Tom Giblin's I got to hear Ned Giblin (recently-former owner of said establishment) instead. Later on Tim from Skelpin showed and accompanied Ned with uilleann pipes. During Finnegan's Wake, I finally got a call-back in that Ned heard and it just about made him lose it. =D "I need to stop after each verse just to hear these!" That made my night. =) I've only been trying to get him to do that for almost a decade.

I talked to Tim after the show and he said they'd be playing Tuesday at Anthology on India St. While Skelpin doesn't scratch my Irish pub-song itch very well, they are a fantastic band. I'm thinking I'll be checking it out just for a change of pace.

Last night I stopped by Gallagher's to see Steelin' Tin because it was Chandra's birthday and how could I not? It's one block up from the Harp, Tony started late because of the Ireland vs. Italy rugby match... and as webmaster, I feel obligated to catch at least a couple of their shows. =)

Speaking of changing pace, Tony won't be playing at the Harp this month, so it's just Thursdays and Fridays at Giblins. I gotta find something to do with my Saturdays.

Slán go fóill, a chairde.
