Saturday I had my second mandolin lesson and I told my teacher Randy about the adventures I'd had the week before with strings breaking, bridge popping out etc and he took my mandolin and checked it out and was really impressed and told me I did a really good job of putting it all together. I guess the bridge adjustment is kind of complicated and he was surprised I'd nailed it my first time out, so yay me! Thank God for the Internet, you can find instructions on how to do just about anything.
After my lesson he told me they were having a jam session that night and that I should come. I thought he meant to come listen and observe so I can see what goes on, but then he said 'no, bring your mandolin so you can play.' I was excited and terrified at the same time. I was tempted to chicken out and not go but then I didn't want to look like a total puss to my new teacher so I sucked it up(winks at Marlo) and went since I'd rather be embarrassed because I suck at something than be embarrassed because I'm a coward. I've never played with anyone else and had no idea of what I would even be able to do since I'm such the n00b and all. When I got there they had handouts with the songs that were going to be played with corresponding chords. I got the basic rundown on what I was supposed to do and Randy showed me all the chords and then we started playing. For the first 4 or 5 songs I felt like a total loser because I kept getting lost and couldn't keep up with the chord changes and just sat there looking retarded, but I finally started catching on and did ok for the last 2 songs. Now I have a list of chords for a bunch of songs and a basic idea of how to practice them so it's on now bitches! I should be able to do a lot better at next month's jam =) I'm so happy I found this place and have the chance to take these lessons.
My cat Chevy has the cutest habit when I'm playing. Whenever I'm practicing he gets into my mandolin case and chills out there or falls asleep and it makes me feel like he's supporting me or something. (I know it's because the inside lining of the thing is soft and cushy and that's why he's there, but don't burst my bubble ok?)
